... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
Experiences would be greatly appreciated. I have read medi rabbit and the uni of miami articles. My vet is mulling over how best to wrap Flo's feet over the weekend and we will be going for it once she has decided the best path. Needs to be wriggle and chew proof!

The difference between Flo's feet and Domino's is that as yet there is no sore as such. Just inflamed skin. one heel looks as if the skin is thinking about breaking down and the other has become more bald.

would the petflex not work just to wrap it,
domino used to try and chew it but could not get it off

I have done that this evening. I am slightly worried about getting it too tight though. She is attacking it quite well.

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
whe the vet did it and showed me i noticed domino's paws started to ballon so i quickly undone it and re did it and it was fine from then on i gently wrapped it with just enough pressure to not stretch but rather just slightly pull as it self adherescheryl'n'bruce'flo wrote:I have done that this evening. I am looking back over your threads on Domino Rob but am finding it hard to tell from the photos how high up her leg you bandaged her.

Ok, that is what I have done. She is licking the bandage like mad. I think the little madam is trying to work it down over the hock joint. You would think that she does not want to get better.

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
Yes we have bandaged up sore hocks and this is what we used. Some bandage all the hock but we cut out a hole in the self adhesive thick padding
and make sure the holes go over the sore part of the hocks.
Thick Adhesive padding from Boots, went over the hocks with a hole cut out.
Then medical tape to keep the pads on. ( just to hold it in place-not to tight else it can stop the circulation)
Self adhesive horse bandage to wrap round the feet. ( Co-Flex and you can buy it in all different colours and designs)
This is Angel our blind Bridge bunny with the adhesive padding on and the holes cut in over the hocks.
Sadly his sore hocks were due to Osteomyelitis in his bones, his leg bones were just crumbling he had
no bone mass and we had to have him pts
There is also this Cheryl if it helps http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Skin_diseases/Mechanical/Pod/Podo.htm

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
Thank you Maysie. I assume that you do not peel of the adhesive bit of the padding. I had read those 2 links previously but they seem to contradict each other slightly. I had tried the miami method and it was very tricky with a wriggly Flo. Even wrapping around a straight bit of bandage can take several attempts.
She managed to remove one bandage overnight. She appears to have chewed down the bit above the hock and then simply pulled the foot piece off. She is certainly not daft. I manage to rebandage it this morning with some difficulty as Bruce felt he should help and so sat on my lap next to the up turned Flo and generally got in the way.

No don't peel the adhesive off and face it away from the sore hock.
It is very difficult to keep the bandages on a bunny with sore hocks and Mike has often said he is going to invent a sort of a bunny sock for rabbits with sore hocks he just hasn't had
time to sit down and sort it out.
Some people use Dermasol cream on sore hocks and say it's very good Cheryl.

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
I have seen people say that they have used cotton baby socks so I might give that a go. When I got home today she had chewed a nice hole in the top of one foot (bandage) making an uncomfortable looking hole. I am wondering if that anti chew vet wrap would be better as she seems to lick a lot before she chews.

You could try it Cheryl, we found the Co-Flex bandages very good as they are stretchy.

Yes I think they are Rob as pet flex are what they use at Vet's and some have paw prints on, Co-Flex are the horse ones but are just the same.

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
I have been using that sort of bandage. They are generally called cohesive bandages and powerflex make a no chew version that is safe for horses therefore probably safe for buns.
Maysie, when Mike is designing his bunny socks could he also design some sort of burrito that will make it easier for lone bunny parents to admisiter health care such as bandages to their charges?

He has an idea about the hock socks for bunnies and I have just told him about the burrito for lone parents
*I'd laugh if he comes up with something *

Re: ... experience in wrapping sore hocks? u/d pics
On long evenings when I have nothing better to do I dream of something in a slanket sort of design that you can have access to all four legs and clamp between your legs for security. I don't believe in trancing but even if I did Flo does not believe in it. I have also changed her onto 10cm vetwrap this evening which will hopefully cover the area required in 1 layer this giving her better movement, requires less wrapping therefore less struggle. She is currently holding one leg up of the floor so she obviously in some discomfort there. I will need to buy some padding tomorrow also.
