Kobi fur loss?
Hi Everyone
I feel so bad I haven't posted for a while I've been checking in to keep up to date with everyone though, just had a manic few months getting a dog, getting married and then some illness in the family.. anyway on saturday I noticed a bald patch on Kobi's back, his skin looks healthy so I think he may just be moulting as Cookie hasn't been affected if it was mites, but I just hadn't come across such a big moult like this before. He's acting normal and as cheeky as ever but just need some opinions from my fellow hoppers!
this was taken on Saturday-
thanks

Re: Kobi fur loss?
has anything stressed him out recently maybe something changed,
does it seem to bother him if touched around that area, personaly i would let the vet just take a look to be on the safe side,
hope he's ok

Re: Kobi fur loss?
That is quite a big bald patch - did it suddenly appear? Any signs of hair loss or thinning anywhere else. Is he scratching / biting at himself or grooming a lot?
I'd be inclined to have a vet check it out for peace of mind....

Re: Kobi fur loss?
Have you got the dog just recently as it could be fur loss to stress due to the dog. That is a quite a bad fur loss. If it's on the back it could be mites as they can appear due to stress as well.

Re: Kobi fur loss?
Oh no I hope he's not stressed He doesn't seem to mind me touching it, although he does hop around to face me when i try to take a close look. He's got a smaller bald patch on the other side too, so his fur in the middle kind of goes down in a V shape. He moults contantly and sometimes the fur from his back comes out in chunks but never looks like any is missing, but this just seem to appear overnight.
I've had the dog since March, but they have a room to themselves now and separated by a gate so they don't mix with him only if he's on a lead. He does bark occasionally though so perhaps that is causing stress?
Thank you, going to try to book him in to see a vet tomorrow.

Re: Kobi fur loss?
if a rabbit is undergoing stress they can get mites otherwise could be many ways i would think,
maybe like fleas they can transfer from dog to dog to rabbit etc... i'm really not sure but if kobi has them i would treat them all.
don't feel bad it's not anything you've done x

Re: Kobi fur loss?
Looking at the second photo that you have posted I would certainly take Kobi to the vet's and let them have a look at it as that's a big bald patch .

He's booked in for this evening, it looks like some fur has grown in some places but fallen out in others
Cookies coming along too to have her checked out although no sign of bald patches. Today is going to drag so much!

Oh that's good better to find out what it is and it can be treated, I wondered if it was alopecia even.
Keep us posted as it's always good to know what it is in case anyone else has the same problem with their bunny
Good Luck at the Vets xxxx

Re: Kobi fur loss?
He's been to the vets, they suspect it is mites, he has like dandruff in the bits of fur that where still in tact, however weren't certain as the bald patches are symmetrical which can be a male hormone thing in unneutured rabbits, but he is neutered so not quite sure if there would be any connection there.
The vet suggested flea treatment every 2 weeks for the next 6 weeks initially and if there's no progress then will have to have blood tests to see if it's something internal
He gave the vet a couple of big thumps as she put him back in the carrier!
He's never been ill and he's not really acting any different.

Re: Kobi fur loss?
That doesn't sound right to me Hun, I'm sure there is a specific treatment for mites and I don't think it's flea treatment - has anyone else heard of treating mites this way?

No, in fact I thought it was dangerous in many cases. What is the name of the treatment? The standard treatment for mites in small furries is ivermectin. You can also - and I would recommend you do - use a spray such as indorex to treat the environment he is living in.

Re: Kobi fur loss?
Sorry yes it is ivermectin 450mcg - xeno spot on
Is that okay?
He's got lots of loose fur which I want to brush out but I don't want to cause more irritation or stress

Re: Kobi fur loss?
That should be ok. I would be tempted to give him a good brush. Bearing in mind that the mites will only benefit from the dead skin and old fur.
