Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I've lived a bit of a sheltered life regards food
Are carrots with tops a seasonal thing? I really want to try Molly and Junior with the tops but I can't find them anywhere
And I have tried everywhere I can think of
I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time??

Try Tesco's and they are usually sold all year round as far as I know

Re: Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
Thanks Maysie
My grandma used to buy them for Thumper from Aldi or lidl or somewhere like that (that was a long time ago though!) but I tried them all last weekend.
We don't have a big tesco near us but there's a small one not too far away, I will try there at the weekend

Yep, Tescos often have them in, as do some local markets/farmers markets. Failing that, you could always buy some seeds and have a go at growing them indoors. You would need a deepish pot though, but not too deep if its just the tops your after

i'm going to sound really stupid now (i know i normally do ) but do you cut off the tops with the little piece of carrot attached and give them or do you only give the green bits

I was intending just giving them the tops. I read that if you cut them off and put them in water like you would flowers, they last quite a whilefiver wrote:i'm going to sound really stupid now (i know i normally do ) but do you cut off the tops with the little piece of carrot attached and give them or do you only give the green bits

I bought some seeds and never got around to planting them, so i gave them to one of the residents at work to grow for me At least i know they will survive. Although, i did tell him to let me know when they were a few inches long, so i could pick one every week or 2 for the bunnies. He seems to think that i will feed them all at the same time, and waits until they cant be left any longer, and then they all end up going to waste

Re: Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
Tescos have them in - the carrots that come with the tops are much nicer to eat for us humans than the regular ones.
That's my excuse for buying them at least to Chris as they are a wee bit more expensive.
I cut them off and keep them in a vase - cut glass no less! They then last several days. The buns love them

Re: Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
We get ours either from Sainsburys and the local market (I get most of our veg and herbs from the Market) and we can get them all year round. I keep them on the carrots until I give them to the little guys as they stay fresher - then we either use the carrots or give them to my friend for her dog. The buns do get the odd one or two tho......

I get mine from the local market. A lot of people ask for them to be cut off so you get a few bunny owners there asking for free tops!

Re: Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
My 2 prefer the tops to the carrots!
And this shows how much nicer and juicier the carrots are with the tops attached:
You can see the little carrot stained mowf and a little pool of carrot juice on the floor!

None of us are keen on Rosemary - try them on that
You could just take them shopping with you and let them pick what they like...

Re: Carrot tops? U/D Yaay!!!
Thank you hoppers I managed to get carrots with tops today
My OH pointed out that I'm an imbecile and there are 2 tesco's not too far away. Less than 10 miles in either direction
They loved the tops Junior gobbled his up!! I didn't think Molly liked them at first because she ate the kale and then went for a run round the room. Bless her, I think she was just over excited because she came back and gobbled it up
So, my next question.... Are the tops safe to feed daily?
Thanks again guys

I did think they were going to be difficult to keep! Particularly annoying when I can't get them in the local supermarket
I don't know what I'm going to do with all the carrots We don't have a market where I can go and ask for just the tops!
