Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
I bought a massive bale of hay for my lot for just £3 but I've opened it and it is damp inside and really smelly. So that's a no goer, and has put me off buying farm bales for sure now!
I wanted to get some hay from Hay for Pets as their prices are pretty good. I know a lot of you have the Ings and I was just wondering is this similar to meadow hay in it's variety of textures, stalks etc? This is what my buns love really, a good mix of stuff. They tend to get bored with just stalky/soft hay alone.
Thanks

This is the trouble sometimes with bales of hay I think it depends on how and where they store them, if it's damp inside the bale that's usually a sign the bales are not kept inside and as soon as they get damp they go mouldy and smell. It's most annoying when you buy a bale of hay and it's like that in the middle. They should replace that for you.

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
You were probably sold an edge bale (from the edge of the stack) and these will probably be wet as for £3 the farmer will be making a loss on that bale. If it is stored cut side out, it will draw in water. Edge bales tend to have one side a slightly different colour to the rest.
Are you able to choose your own or do they give it to you? Try to choose one a bale in in the stack.
I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs... sorry...

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
Thanks guys. Think I will pick up a bag of Ings for the terrible twosome then, at the moment they've got some pet shop hay as they were just refusing to eat the bale hay and I don't blame them! My greedy piggies had a slice that wasn't damp so I'm going to have a look though the rest of the bale and see what is able to be kept. They are like dustbins on feet (they have feet coming out of their bodies I think)
I would go back but it's really not worth it for the sake of £3. Thanks for the tip though Winks3, it might explain why some parts of the bale are more dry than others

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
I buy my hay from a country supplier that does horse hay. It comes in big (not massive farm bales) bales but is plastic wrapped. I am usually about £6 for a bale that last me a month or so.
I don't buy bulky stuff off the internet because I always get absolutely clobbered for postage. As soon as they see the IV (Inverness) postcode, they load on the cost. They even try to lump us in with the Islands to get even more money from us. It is really annoying!! When I was looking at hutches, it was going to £30 - £40 just for the courier.

That must be so frustrating. Postage is nightmare enough let alone at those rates!

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
I think I'm going to get some Ings, Hay for Pets sent me a new (smaller) bag of hay to replace the one with the bugs and it's awful, the old bag had a really good mix of stalky and soft strands (but mostly stalky) this bag is like a bag of readigrass, it's all grass hardly any stalky bits, Hector doesn't think much to it either
I think it'll be going in the bin -sigh-

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
I don't know, it's a good thing he's cute!
I've ordered a 1.8kg bag to try, hopefully he will like it. He used to eat loads of hay with the original bag of meadow, he still eats the hay from this bag but one top up lasts 3 days whereas with the original bag it would barely last a day!

Re: Ings Hay from Hay for Pets
That's the thing Zo. I have noticed so much more hay is needed now I have two who are both HUGE hay eaters. That's why I bought the bale, as it was the most economical way to do it. Pet shop bags don't even last them a week.
I'll be ordering the biggest size available of Ings hay and hoping they like it!!
