Mr Mojo is just hairy beyond belief!
I got into another battle with Mojo last night - panting, boxing, digging, biting was about how I left him after about 40 minutes of trimming and combing, to have made very little effect.
He is just matts upon matts. I am at my end with it
He will not stand daily grooming because of his trust issues. I was trimming him once a week but that's too long for him to go inbetween, he just matts up. Any more frequently and he becomes terrified of me again
I'm wondering how possible it would be to shave him? What do you guys think?

Re: Mr Mojo is just hairy beyond belief!
Please forgive me but I just can't stop laughing at the title of the thread
Angora Jess is the same, Mike brushes her but he has to do it over so many days as she just get's herself into a state,
and she matts really badly , some of them are horrendous and takes day's to get out. So I know how you feel.

Re: Mr Mojo is just hairy beyond belief!
LOL Maysie!! I think I should change it to "Mr" not "My"
I love him to bits but it is so much work. I wouldn't change him for the world now but I am a tad angry at the RSPCA. They did not tell me he was Angora and had such a dense coat. He must have been in a dreadful state when they found him and he had no hair so expect he was shaved, but they only told me he was "long haired". There is a big difference between Angora and just long haired, as you know. I probably wouldn't have taken him on knowing he needed that much management, but I am glad I have him because not kept on top of he would be so much worse. And I love him! However he could have easily gone to some unsuspecting person without the time, patience or confidence to groom him as he needs.

I agree Angora's have horrendous coat's and really they are a specialist breed as they need so much grooming. Jess at the moment her eyes are running because the fur is now going into her eyes and Mike cut's it back but it grows again, her feet are awful but she won't let Mike do them and so he struggles with her. I think she will eventually have to go to the vet's and be given a light GA to do her feet . Her coat is just sooooooooooo thick it's difficult to trim it and sometimes even to shave it. I have said this before but I hope they never ever bring them back and start selling them in pet shops.

You're welcome guys
I know, Maysie. If an Angora rabbit was a "bottom of the garden in a hutch" type bunny they would suffer appaulingly.

I hate to mention the word br**der, but I'd try to track one down with Google and email to see how they manage the coats. Some specialist advice and a few tricks of the trade might make it much more easy to manage

I have been on a few Angora websites and a br**der's website but it was the same as what we are doing although they suggest a wire floor in the indoor hutch...but nooooooo she is not having a wire floor to sleep on

Re: Mr Mojo is just hairy beyond belief!
Herbie is a long haired lionhead but only really gets knots when a piece of hay becomes trapped in his fur. I don't try to brush the tangle out but cut the fur as close as I can to his skin.
I tend to let his fur get longer in the winter but from this time of the year onwards I do give him an all over hair cut every three to four weeks. It always looks a bit tatty but hey! I trim it down to about the same length as a short haired bun.
Can you keep Mojo's fur a lot shorter, he might not object as much to a hair cut as opposed to grooming. Herbie doesn't object, in fact I think he welcomes having the hair trimmed from around his eyes. He must have very limited peripheral vision when his fur is full length.

Re: Mr Mojo is just hairy beyond belief!
Thanks for all the ideas guys
I think Mojo is going to go up to the vets, be given a light sedation and be shaved completely. I can then keep the hair cut short permanently and we won't end up with the problem we currently have again.
It is a shame to shave off all of his beautiful coat, but his welfare and happiness is far more important to me, and I think he will thank me for it. Especially in the summer months.
Vannessa - his coat is already matts upon matts, and they are too close to the skin to cut away properly. I have been keeping the hair around them short so that it doesn't grow into them and make them any bigger.
