Spaying--not recommended for does? Empty Spaying--not recommended for does?

Post by gentl Thu May 09, 2013 4:40 pm

I called and arranged for Rory's neutering today and when asking the price I asked
what it would be for his companbun when we got her. They said they definitely are
against spaying the doe. This is the most rabbit savvy clinic within 500 miles of me.
I called around and asked several other vet practices and they concurred!

I lost my Lady to ovarian cancer when she was 8 and I don't want to loose another
that way. They said that the percentage of the does dying from the surgery is
greater than them getting ovarian cancer.

I've read so much about this topic from people here and on other sites. This vet
is a good one and I think if I had some research to send them that she would read it.
Could those of you with rabbit savvy vets ask your vet if they know of articles about
this? Not just Forum stuff, but vet to vet type of professional literature.

Rory's neuter is next Wednesday and yes, I'm worrying a tad bit already. We are
looking for him a doe. I found a beautiful little girl but she is only 5 weeks old and
the owner wants her gone. IMHO that is far too young to leave the mother. They
need to learn 'bunny culture' first. Rory did not. He is a wild child!

Your assistance in this would be muchly appreciated! And may I please have some
pre-neuter vibes for Rory. As some of you may remember, we lost our Thumper last
fall as he was waiting at the vets for his dental. This is a different vet BTW.

Thanks Hoppers!

Sending lads of vibes for Rory! Please let us know how he gets on hunni x

You could email RWAF and ask if their vet - Richard Saunders - to provide info to your vets. They are very helpful and I think they must have some fact based info available.

It may be that it isn't a common operation in the US and that the vets are not confident in performing it. It probably requires a deeper anaesthetic than with a male, which always has risks, as any operation under GA does.

All I can say is that I have been on forums for about six years and in all that time I can only remember a handful of does not making it through the operation. The vast majority come through the operation well and make a fast recovery.

However, this is your rabbit and you have to make the decision based on the information that you have. I would never presume to say whether you should do it or not.

I would also contact the U.S. based house rabbit society for information. They are the inspiration for our RWAF and I know they support neutering.

Well I had no trouble with Jenna when she was spayed.
I'd definitely would not want to take the risk of her getting cancer pale
I think it's a good Idea if anyone would know it's the RWAF Thumbs Up

I read this the other night when i was lurking and thought how odd! ...and concerning at the same time!

I know of people in the US that have had their does spayed, which confuses me even more! Unfortunately I dont know of any useful information, documents or papers etc that may be of any use to you. Could you possibly contact the RWAF?

I still think it is imperative. I keep reading article after article that says it is necessary.
If this bunny savvy group of doctors won't do the surgery i don't know what we will do.
But since we don't even have the bunny yet, i'm not going to be worrying. Just will keep
reading and writing for answers.
