Food colouring on Rabbits question
We are taking the babies for their check up's and sexing ( we have an idea who's what but want to be sure ) on Tuesday and 3 of the black baby buns are so alike it's going to be difficult to know who's who would it be ok to use a little food colouring to mark the bunnies ? Is it safe enough ?
Thank You

Re: Food colouring on Rabbits question
I've heard that most of the food colorings are safe but perhaps I shouldn't be the one to answer this since food additives vary from country to country. I know know that some of the red food dye can be problematic not only because it can look like blood but can have carmine in it and that can be a problem. It is often used in human cosmetics but they have tried to ban it here in cosmetics and foods since so many have problems with it. I know I'm allergic.
Beet juice would be a choice. It could be sponges on. Rabbits will be licking the colorings though! Personally, I'd be afraid to use a commercial food dye.

Re: Food colouring on Rabbits question
I am wondering how you would see any colouring on a black bun?

Re: Food colouring on Rabbits question
I've read of people putting different coloured dots on the inside of their ears.
I'm not sure if it is food colouring they use though

I'd be worried about it running into their ears though

Re: Food colouring on Rabbits question
Someone has suggested we shave the ear slightly different on the three black buns and so that sounds a better idea than the food colouring...and safer
so that's what we will do
so that's what we will do

Have you seen the tattooing kits for bunns? Breeders here will tattoo the inside of the ear with a number or logo.
