Just lost Barley
Barley has just died in my arms
I noticed that he was not terribly interested in his breakfast and that there were a few small poops and some caecotrophs in his litter tray when I changed it this morning. When I came back from TKD, I went out to check him and he was sitting huddled in a corner, his breakfast was untouched. I brought him into the house put a hot water bottle in with him and gave him some Metacam (0.4 ml) and held him. When he was in my arms, he moved his back legs a bit then I noticed a tic on his back. After a few minutes, I realised that he had died. It is just so sudden and completely out of the blue! Poor little chap. I am glad he got his last few minutes in the warm and with company. Such a shame.

It is such a shock! Completely out of nowhere. He has never been ill before and has been completely fine. It is all so sudden.

Re: Just lost Barley
Any clues as to cause of death? The tick alone would not normally cause death.

I'm so very sorry that you have lost Barley
I think it's always worse when it's so quickly like this as it comes as a complete shock to the system.
Binky free forever at the Bridge Barley all well again xxxxxxx
Sending hugs

Re: Just lost Barley
Absolutely nothing. Last night when I gave them their veg, he was standing up grabbing it as normal. This morning he was quiet and sat in his corner, but he was quite a timid bun so that was strange but not a deal breaker.
When I brought him into the house, he seemed very weak and struggled to sit up but I wondered if that was his being stressed at being grabbed and brought into the house. As soon as he came in, he just faded and then died. His tummy wasn't bloated but obviously something has made him ill.
The only clue was the small poops and some caecotrophs which would imply that he had some kind of tummy problem.

Oh Nickie, I am so sorry
I'm glad he had this time with you and you got to live together indoors to get to know each other properly. Also that, hard as it is, you got those last few minutes with him.
What a horrible shock
Binky free, Barley bun
For your Humum who must be feeling very sad indeed

Re: Just lost Barley
Thanks guys for all the wishes. I don't think there was anything that I could have done as he was such a private little guy. I am so glad that I didn't go out tonight and find him dead in his corner. That would have been awful. As everyone has said, I was there when he died and I know it was peaceful. Otherwise, I just wouldn't have known what happened. He had a 10 minutes in the warm, in a warm hay-filled box and at the end was cuddled as he slipped away.
I reckon he went into shock as that would explain how he went so quickly.

Re: Just lost Barley
Oh, Nickie! Bless your heart! This is indeed sad news. I have lost 2 buns :poof: and it just wrenches your heart out. I was able to cuddle Lady as she died and that was of some comfort. She was sleeping under the bed below my Hubby's head as she did every night. We heard her thump wildly and I got her out. Sweet little one was seizing. I'm glad you got last moments with Barley and gave warmth and cuddles.
