Help!! poorly Feet I Think
Just been cleaning rios bun and noticed her back feet have lost fur and look bright red and one looks like it has a blister
She is a house rabbit and so has nothing that could hurt her feet. My bedroom is all carpet and when she goes outside shes on pavemet and grass but hasn't been out in about a week coz of weather. Her litter tray is just sawdust with hay on the top.
Gonna have to take her to vets tomorrow I think ... any ideas in meantime?
thanks xx

Re: Help!! poorly Feet I Think
I think this s classic sore hocks hunni.
The vets should give you some abx for the infection as its really dangerous for her if these abscess.
Daisy gets this from time to time and when he does its because he is having some back pain and therefore holding himself differently putting pressure on his hocks.
We normally put very soft fleece over the carpets to reduce the carpet burn and we put on sudocream twice a day.

Re: Help!! poorly Feet I Think
Flo has had similar problems in the last year or so.
A vets trip is a good idea as you need to get the 'blister' checked out, but this looks like classic sore hocks in the early stages to me. There is loads of ideas online but be careful with them. Flo had her feet bandaged with vet wrap but it just dug into the back of her heel and caused another sore. It is thought that hard flooring is more of a problem than softer carpets, but it could be a particularly abrasive bit of rug or carpet that has caused the problem. You want to make sure your vet lakes a good look at the foot and if necessary xray them to ensure there is no underlying ligament damage. My very rabbit savvy vet also gave Flo some metacam for the inflammation and septrin for any underlying infection.
What has worked for Flo is baby socks. I use the thicker sports sock type baby sock as it offers more cushioning. I tape them snugly in place with Micropore tape. They do get very chewed but she will now keep one on for several days which has meant that the fur has been able to begin to grow back. They are much more effective than any bandage.

The vet thinks this is what happened with Flo too.Katieb wrote:

It happens really easily so don't beat yourself up. Podermatitis is just another name for sore hocks. The problem is that it is really hard to get to clear up.emma'n'rio wrote:Someone said it was Pododermatitis and its scared the hell outta me. Re: Help!! poorly Feet I Think
Sore hocks you need an antibacterial cream like ‘Flamazine’ for them off the vet.

Re: Help!! poorly Feet I Think
It's sore hocks and it can happen so easily so it's nothinjg you have done. Quite often carpet can make it worse depending on the type of carpet, if its quite abrasive you could try getting a rug thats a bit softer. Best way to tell is to rub your elbow on it, I know that sounds daft but its delicate skin, and if its abrasive on you, you know its bad for bunny too (i look like a crazy person at the boot sales getting soft carpet haha)
Flamazine is good, in all honesty the hocks don't look too bad so if you can get some flamazine from the vets at this stage it should be fine so don't worry.
What do you use in the litter tray for absorbing urine? x

I'd have a look at her back claws too, they need to be kept short enough that she is putting her foot down properly
