Poorly eye
Hi all,
It looks like H has a bit of a sticky right eye. The eye itself seems ok, but the fur beneath indicates it's not so good. Been like that about 3 days. Have been gently wiping with sterile water, but hasn't got better (hasn't got worse either). He went to the vets for a check up and vaccs just over a week ago, so his teeth are fine. Could it be related to vaccs? Will take him back to vets, but if there are any simple remedies out there, I'm keen to try them first as he didn't like the vets so much!
Thank you

Re: Poorly eye
There are a few causes of a weepy eye. An infection of the eye is an obvious one but I think you would spot this - the whites of his eye would appear redder than normal and Hector would probably show signs of discomfort too in that his eye may not be open completely. A piece of hay caught in the eyelids can cause irritation and weepiness, this happened to Herbie so it's worth having a look to make sure nothing is caught in/under his eyelids.
If there is no obvious infection of the eye then the most probable cause is a blocked tear duct. If the tube that drains the tears into the nose becomes blocked or narrow then the tears cannot drain away fast enough or completely. A vet is often able to unblock the tube by passing saline down the tube from a tiny syringe. My Rosie had this done whilst she was awake.
The tear duct can become blocked by an infection eg in snuffles or if the tooth roots grow too long and start to press on the tear duct. Looking at Hector's teeth inside his mouth doesn't give an indication of what the tooth roots are doing, an Xray is needed for that. However if Hector has had no tooth issues in the past I would think it unlikely that the tooth roots are to blame.
It does sound as though the tear duct is to blame. It may be worth a trip back to the vet's - sorry - sometimes antibiotic eye drops can sort the problem out, but a tear duct flush may be needed.

Re: Poorly eye
Hi there, I agree with Sixer - the most likely explanation is a blocked tear duct. The vet can flush it out and give you some abx cream.

Re: Poorly eye
Thanks all. He is sneezing occasionally and adding the odd snuff noise which isn't normal. He's fine in himself, but will get him to the vets so he sorted asap.

Re: Poorly eye
Lots of vibes to heal a poorly eye
Patch had a poorly eye recently and had some gel drops to put in for a week, the vet also flushed it all out. He had some sneezes a few weeks later and was making sniffly noises when eating so was on antibiotics which seem to have cleared everything up.
We still give him an immune support treat each day.

Re: Poorly eye
The noises have stopped, and his eye got a little better, but is worse again today. Not in work tomorrow, so will call vets first thing. Hopefully a flush out will do the job.
Thanks again :-)
