Little critters in litter trays
Every day when I am cleaning out Molly and Junior's litter trays there are tiny little critters in it.
I'm using back 2 nature litter
Feeding Ings and alfalfa king hay
The window in their room is open and there's a mosquito net over it, although not covering the vent. These tiny little critters are def small enough to fit through the spaces in the net though.
I can't see any on Molly and Junior themselves.
Any ideas? Should I be concerned or is it just perhaps just a time of year thing??
I'd quite like to close the window and vent and see if there are any in the tray after then but I don't want to bake them
It's one thing after another

I don't know They're tiny and black and def look like non stinging bugs. I don't even think I'd be able to get a pic of them because they're so small.
I don't think they can fly. Well, I've never seen one try!
I'll need to google and see if I can identify!

I really don't think it's fleas or anything on them. They're not scratching at all and I can't see a thing on them.

Re: Little critters in litter trays
are they like little teeny back lines...no wings? when I used to live in kent - everything used to get covered in them...but just at this time of year and then they would disappear...but they even used to manage to get themselves inside pictures and stuff....We used to live near rapeseed fields and I often wondered if they were coming in on the wind.

Re: Little critters in litter trays
Definitely can't see any wings. I guess they are like little lines because occasionally I have to really squint in the tray to see if it is a bug or just a teeny bit of hay! And then when I focus on them they are bug shaped!
Thanks for your thoughts

Re: Little critters in litter trays
Hmmm, sounds weird
I personally wouldn't worry too much if they're not harming or upsetting Molly and Junior

Re: Little critters in litter trays
They are called 'Thrips ' or 'Thunder flies' they are very very tiny and can get through most fly screens as they are that small and you usually find them dead all over the window sills. We have them they even land on my computer screen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrips
If you google them and put images it will bring photos up of them on window sills.

You are dead right Maysie hun, we got them all the time through the screens and trapped dead in the nets too but most of them got through every time.

Re: Little critters in litter trays
Thank you ladies!
I'm guessing I needn't worry because Molly and Junior are clear of them?
