What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I'm struggling They have everything they need!
So far I've got them a new pop up cube. It's blue so that'll be a change. I guess that means it's a BCI rather than a OCI? And a 2kg box of fiba first. Oh and I bought them a second heat pad from Amazon on Friday. The latter 2 aren't really Xmas gifts though.
Input welcome, especially as their (made up) birthday is at the end of the month too!

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I am in a quandary too Thumper love and Holly doesn't like toys and she has quite a lot on a daily basis too, so I am struggling. I did think of a cardboard castle but she has a cardboard box to chew and is very happy with it. Edible treats are limited too because of the content of many of them. If I think of anything I will share.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
Last year Henry was confined to a dog crate so I made him up a bunny-hamper. A cardboard box with lots of different veggies buried in several types of hay and dried herbs etc.. I also popped in naughty treats like fenugreeks and dried banana and dried apricot, cheerios and the odd cocoa-pop scrounged from a friend.
He had quite a happy time making a helluva mess and letting a bun make a mess is a great present on its own!

That sounds lovely Woodwench love. I must admit I am in a quandary but we have a sign in our window saying "Santa, please stop here for Holly" so I have to think really hard lol!

Okay Jo... so what if Santa already has plenty of holly and doesn't need to stop for any more?

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I'm still collecting and buying.
They are getting a cardboard castle.
And I got some treats for their advent calendar too.
Ah and a new tunnel.
Just more love and attention.

Ha ha Woodwench love, thet is very witty. I never thought of it I might get Holly a tunnel but she will probably ignore it and spend time as usual with Mr Chewy Box who lives with her on her sofa during the day. I will probably find that our kitty Felix will enjoy it more.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I've no bun to buy for now so I've just posted off a £100 cheque to the Ark in Henry's memory (he came from there) to buy some goodies for the buns in their care this Christmas.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I said I would never have another pet after losing Loll and then, four months later, along came Henry. So, I've learned to never say Never, but the last few weeks have made me take a long, hard look at where I am now at in my life. I'm nearer 66 than 65 and my health is not what anyone would envy me for; I live in the back of beyond without transport and with the nearest neighbour half a mile away.
Rabbits are not, as we all know, cheap pets; getting Henry to the vet by taxi often cost more than the vet's fee and two trips in a week (which he made more than once) used up an entire weeks pension plus some. Add to that the taxi fare to get me to the Dr's, which I need more than I like, and my Bank account takes a hammering it does not recover from.
So it would be crazy for me to commit to another bun, or any pet for that matter. Bunny boarding isn't readily available in this area and my friends are all much older and more infirm than myself so they could not be prevailed upon to look after a lonely bun should I have another emergency episode like the previous weekend. Plus: I don't think I could take another loss. The older I get the harder it is to say "Goodbye". The stress of Henry's last year really took its toll on me and even though I miss him like crazy and I'm also starting to really feel the emptiness of the house and miss the presence of another living being, I also feel it would be wrong to give in and get another pet.
My own future is becoming increasingly uncertain, I feel it wouldn't be unfair on the animal. I've been lucky renting this place, the landlord may be a bit of a sod in many ways but he's never banned pets. I may have to leave here if my health continues to decline and finding pet friendly places isn't easy.
So, remembering I never say never, I won't be getting another bun .... or any pet.
I donated to the Ark because I do not celebrate Christmas, I am not religious and feel going along on the roller coaster that is Christmas with no religious belief is hypocritical. So I do not buy presents, send cards (except for the Winter Solstice) or celebrate with all the usual glitter and bingeing. Therefor I gave to the Ark to help their buns at a time when they need it most.... I expect most folk spend more than the amount I gave the Ark on their Christmas food alone.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I totally understand your logic, Dee but I really hate the thought of you feeling lonely
Have you considered perhaps a bird of some kind to keep you company? Maybe a wee budgie or something? It would at least take away the feeling of isolation and would surely need far less vet trips.
I would think a bird could be left alone for longer periods than a rabbit, given plenty food and water is left?*
*Disclaimer: pardon my ignorance if I'm wrong about being able to leave a bird for longer periods. It was an assumption...

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I've had all manner of birds from Golden pheasants, doves, bantams (outdoors) to budgies and zebra finch (indoors).
They were all "as well as" pets .... kept as well as rabbits, dogs, guinea pigs and hamsters.
When I lost Loll I considered everything mentioned above. Birds I ruled out because ... well, quite simply, they don't have fur!
GP's don't have the same charisma (or brains) as dogs and rabbits and hamsters get up too late.
A dog I am too decrepit to exercise and they are too hard to get to the vet (taxi's don't like dogs). And ... most important as far as I'm concerned, I've already had the greatest dog ever (Misty) and none could come close to her for me.
After Loll I determined the only pet could be a rabbit. But after Henry.... I don't want my heart broken again, I don't think I could take it.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
If I fostered no bun would leave me....
And fosterers need transport for vet runs; no rescue would want to pay for taxi fares.
No, I think, given time, I will learn to live with myself.... damned tough if I can't.

Re: What are the buns getting for Xmas?
I think of it as they are going to a loving home, would break my heart still but is for the best for them.
I have thought about fostering but there is a killer cat about so wouldn't put them through that.

Yes he hunts down all the wild rabbits and I get little poo parcels in the garden. Not sure it has picked up my buns scent

I hope he hasn't love but I can understand your being worried. Cats like this are the reason many people dislike them.
