Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
timothyhay.co.uk are out of hay
So my two are on the ings for now. It’s not as green as it used to be And it’s miles softer than the usual stuff. I’m just amazed they’re eating the ings tho. I took one look at it and thought there was no way!
My auntie bought a bag of the new excel hay for her bunny but she doesn’t like it so it is heading our way. And I’m sending her some ings

I get my hay from overton farm but someone has told me that it not high enough in fibre for rabbits.
So needing to invest in finding new hay.

TimothyHay.co.uk posted on their FB a couple of days ago, they've cut their first field of the year and hay should be ready in about 2 weeks

It was on another forum, I said I buy my hay from overton farm and someone said it wasnt good enough for rabbits. So I asked the vet at edinburgh and he said the hay wont be specialised for rabbits needs as it a general animal hay and suggested timothy.

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
I have always (well for the last eight years or so) just fed ordinary farm bale hay. Four/five pound a bale. I have 20+ rabbits so no way can I afford the posh stuff for that many! I have worked on the basis that if they eat it then no need to upgrade. I am a bit baffled at the suggestion that it wouldn't be high enough fibre though. The posh stuff might be better but the hay I feed is still good quality, not brown etc.

I have to agree with this! Lots of people feed farm hay to their rabbits. I’ve never heard anyone say anything about it not being enough for rabbits.Big Ears wrote:I have always (well for the last eight years or so) just fed ordinary farm bale hay. Four/five pound a bale. I buy Reboot's Burgess LSEH and his Friendly Readigrass and bedding hay from a local pet shop. His Orchard Grass and Timothy from the Hay Experts along with his hay cookies and fibre sticks.

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
The rear guard was annoying me too
I was gonna book thundercracker in to her boarding place for when we go to york, dont think my mum would be able to cope with the medication since shes not had a rabbit of her own in 50 years.
Decided against it and felt she was a bit pushy when I said it wasnt required.
Just cancelling the holiday and staying it home with him now.
Im going to have a look at the hayexpert woodwench what like is there prices.

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
Hay Experts prices can be a bit high but I compare with Amazon prices and, of course, delivery costs, and then make up an order as it works best.
Jo, I agree, some farm hay is very good and comparing with Burgess LSEH I can't fault my local farms but for one bun buying a bale poses a prob, especially if, like me, you're storing it in your spare bedroom!

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
He is very good hun but a typical farmer always moaning LOL! I find it really funny. Even his son tells him to shut up. We just phone up when we want a bale leaving out an Paul collects it. It is a pity you don't live closer sweetie as it is lovely hay.

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
Now I feed rabbits three kinds of grass : Alfalfa hay,Timothy hay,Orchard grass。Hay can be made from ordinary dried grass, but it needs no pesticides and is eaten by rabbits.
Young rabbit Alfalfa hay Nutrients: calorie (kcal/kg) -1800, protein (%) -15.3, fiber (%) -27.0, calcium (%) -1.4.
Adult rabbit Timothy hay Nutrients: calorie (kcal/kg) -2010, protein (%) -6.3, fiber (%) -30.2, calcium (%) -0.2.
Adult rabbit Orchard grass Nutrients: Calorie (kcal/kg) -1829, protein (%) -9.8, fiber (%) -30.0, calcium (%) -0.3.
These hay are sold on Amazon, and the price is OK. In addition, we should pay more attention to the health of rabbits, understand their health, and use veterinary drugs in time.

Re: Where are we all buying hay nowadays?
There are so many types of hay out there and they vary from company to company.
I've had rabbits doing very well (living to 10 yrs of age) on farm hay. Others wouldn't touch it but ate copious amounts of Timothy hay but only from Ox Bow. One rabbit loved Oat, Wheat and Barley hay from Alfalfa King. My last rabbit, until his illness, would eat any hay you put in front of him.
I know some hays are nutritionally better than others but if they will only eat one kind of hay, be it bog standard hay, it's better than no hay at all.
A good rabbit savvy vet is a god send.
