I generally dont agree with any pets for Christmas! They always end up getting neglected, especially if it is for a child! You see the adverts of a dog is for life not just for Christmas! Well this goes for all animals!! Especially rabbits which are misunderstood anyway!! ... Just my view!

I would say bunnys shouldnt be bought at xmas or easter as this is could be more seen as a novelty, some may loose interest, however if they planned on getting one and it just happened to be ready at xmas time etc then thats different. Only prob is this time of year you have to try and build a new bunnies run in the rain, Sad hubby is not looking forward to it but I want it done so the can be slip up in next 2 weeks, I have 2 cages but not got space in the shed for them to sit seperate but can fit perfect inside the house like that while we get the rest of it ready.

I think that as long as it is a well thought through purchase it does not matter what time of year you get a rabbit. The problem is that most people don't think it through. My friends bought their girls a pair of buns for their birthday, but they told me in advance and I made sure they knew what they were getting in to and also that they have a proper set up (which is also why they are happy that I am buying them runaround pipe and doors for their christmas present!) I don't want to see a situation where pets are pushed as christmas pressies but if a family is dead set on having rabbits there is no reason why people can't be buying towards their set up as presents. If there were not pet shop sold pets and all animals required a home check pre-ownership then the present thing would not be so much of an issue.

Most pet shops (the big ones) wont sell animals during the christmas period, I wasnt expecting to get babys this week tho, Fiona took me to opening day of a new rep shop, and the fella that owns it lives right next door, his wife has a passion for bunnies, and she had a litter that were ready, I just had to look at them, SILLY FIONA I came home with 2 babys, but they are small so putting them out in a big play house would have been too much of a drastic change straight away so they are in charlies cage we bought him, so least thats getting more use since I bought it brand new. The lady gave me a cage that she was handed but I wanted them in the bigger one Smile however I am going to have to use the cage when I seperate them till he has his opp.

I really can;t add anything to this you are all correct. Some people would be all right buying a bunny at christmas; all of us for example, we would get a bunny at anytime but as stated above, other people do not think it through If bun it is specifically a present for a child, I would only hope that they take it seriously and give him a good life. Sadly all too often this is not the case.

I think Jay meant was it a time when pet shops traditionally pushed the purchase as a Xmas present like at Easter.

I don't think it is the same as Easter because of the connection with the Easter bunny, it is a heaven-sent marketing opportunity for pet shops.

And the wintery weather on the way to the shop focuses people to the realities of having outside buns.

Must admit our pets at home are really pushy on the right winter stuff, even some of them say to go somewhere else cos its cheaper lol. Only a few do tho, the ones who know I am in all the time lol. I said my bunny is in a playhouse all lined and insulated they were well impressed like the vet. I know I have alot of pets but I take good care off them all.

Sorry, I didn't make that clear, thanks Nickie for clarifying it. I meant is it a time when buns are sold, more than normal, like easter?

Rather than complain about it, I thought mayb a small guide to your new buns first few weeks and then welfare components to consider for the future?

Dobbies give out a leaflet but talk to you, and have an onsite vet there to talk over any worries, and advise, however alot of folks thing oh its just a bunnie no big deal, which is more what gets to me, they ASUME they dont need space, care, or dont even know the right kind of food, I have came across folk that didnt even think they needed hay or veg only the mix cr** you get at supermarkets, they make me mad sometimes. My friend finally is taking my advice on board when she gets her new rabbit (someone let/took it him out his hutch last week) he is gone and the kids miss him, but right now she wants to wait till her little girl starts school then get another one/two but is going to ask me to help her get it right this time.

I don't think rabbits are pushed more at Christmas like they are at Easter although I have noticed some pet shops and big pet stores seem to have more bunnies in at the moment than usual.
I don't think children want or ask for bunnies at Christmas like they do at Easter ( Easter bunny and all that).

Personally I wouldn't buy a child a rabbit till they were of an age where they could and would look after it, more rabbits are unwanted 6 months after Easter and in the Winter due to the cold and damp weather and children not wanting to go outside to clean them out out. I'd make sure that they would realise this before they got one.

I personally wouldnt buy ANY type of pet for a child, unless the child was responsable in nature and completely able to care for the pet regardless of what it is, I have seen a fella buy his son a snake, but the mother (split from father) lets him keep her in the bedroom, the viv was a full glass housing more for crestie geckos (Terrariums) not for a corn snake, with no hides, no heat which you have to have for any time of reptile as they cannot produce there own heat so need to heat from outside there body,(stupid person has no clue), another one had a california king snake (beaty) no heat stat (this is a must for safety for animal and human) the heat mats over heat so easy and can go on fire I would never have one without the stat. The viv was far small for this size of snake and all it had was a bowl a rock and nothing else, makes you so angry.

Yes people buy pets including rabbits alot for christmas, I work part time at a pet store and the manager ordered TONS of nethies, lops and lionhead babies.
Needless to say I squeeeeeeee'd from the cuteness, but it's sad to know that most of them will leave as christmas present and will end up having awful lives or worse, being abandoned..
The other employee and myself do our best to inform the buyers about their needs but we have to keep it short so it's not always easy, and some people just don't care.
We already have people coming in buying animals and when we give them advice they say that the pet isn't for them, it's a christmas gift, so they don't give two craps and leave.
I think the awarness has to keep being spread so more and more people can realize how to truly care for pets.

I think it has become less of an issue here because of the big pets shops and the rescues refusing to sell/ rehome animals during the christmas weeks ( I suspect in the case of the pet shops this was started partly because then they have no live stock to feed in the times when the shops are shut although that is now less of an issue).
