Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
Mack's doing OK...due a couple of jabs at 12 o'clock though.
I'm afraid I don't know who removed Lexie's eye as it was done before I got her, when she was about a year old....she was lucky to have an owner that cared for her before she ended up in rescue.
Hibiscrub is pink but I don't know if it's safe to use in the eye, although it is often used on abcesses. I would call and ask the vets, in the meantime a sterile saline solution will help to clean and flush.

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
I'll just go with a saline solution until I speak to him on Monday and hope that the specilist will be able to reomve it if thats what it come to- thanks .
It's a nightmare to keep on top of cleaning it, if it doesn't get wiped away whilst it's wet then it sticks in the fur and is really difficult to remove.
Now this has happened I've decided no kids

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
When I had Sorrel to stay for me she needed an abcess in her jaw cleaning twice a day, I absolutely couldn't believe how quickly it filled up again
Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
if you need a rabbit specialist i know a really good one that Foxglove has just been to and i have seen him talked about on other rabbit forums too. He is in Andover, Hampshire. Is at least 1.5 hours from me to him so is a hike but worth even longer. not sure where you are though?

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
I'm near Bradford, pretty much on the Leeds Bradford border, my vet knows of two, one in Leeds and another in Harrogate and is contacting them tomorrow.
I'm hoping that its starting to fill up less and less, it seems that the pus is whiter/clearer and not as much of it I don't know, at least her eye isn't protruding like it was before, it's awful, I've wiped it about 4 times for her today, weekdays I do it on a morning before I go to work then at least once on a night and then if it needs doing in the night (I always wake up at about 4) then I do it for her then too, I'm going to ask Dave if he can pop in and do it on a lunchtime because he works 5 minutes away. I've just had to cut away some fur where it was stuck on and dried solid and making it harder to clean, with her being a lop she ends up smearing it across her cheek and getting it on her ear. I put her on her back and she was so good but the minute I put her back upright on my lap I got boxed big time On the plus side she is currently eating pellets like they are going out of fashion, she's had 4 generous handfuls today, she normally gets one small one a day! I've put a bit of vaseline on the fur around the eye so hopefully that will stop it from sticking into her fur quite as much. She's also started drinking the water with baytril in it so I don't have to syringe it into her mouth.

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
Our local rabbit specialist happens to be Frances Harcourt-Brown, that's really reassuring, I'm calling tonight to book an appointment for Poppy to see whether she should have the abscess lanced.

I was going to say your not too far from Harrogate. My vets quite often call her for advice so Poppy will be in great hands
Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
We're going to Harrogate on Tuesday, she's eating loads and seems happy, her eye seems to be getting better but I thought it would be best to see the specialist anyway to see whether we should give the antibiotics longer or have it cleaned surgically, I just want her back to her usual pretty self, her eye is pretty awful to look at, the fur around it is missing and her eyelids are swollen. I'll keep you updated

Poppy is with Dr Harcourt-Brown
Poppy is in Harrogate with Dr Harcourt-Brown, she's having penicillin today and tomorrow she's having her eye removed. Dr Harcourt-Brown said she was suprised that she was eating given the state of her eye but she is optimistic about the surgery. It was awful coming home with an empty carrier, I miss her already I've held it together really well up until today and remained optimistic about her being on abx, her condition did get better but it's still pretty nasty. I know she's in very good hands but I can't help worrying about how she will do after the op, I'd much prefer to keep an eye on her myself but I'm sure we all feel that way.
I know that people always say to take rabbits in pairs but she's been in the house without Charlie, although she has seen him most days, he's too boisterous and can be really funny about being away from home overnight- he usually stops eating, they will be reunited asap.
I will let you know how the op goes when I have spoken to the vet tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
When I called at 11 they told me that she ate well overnight and also passed lots of healthy poops so she will be operated on this afternoon, I can call at 4 to see how she is so I'll keep you updated.
PS- How do I turn off signatures, I'm at work and they aren't very discrete

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
I've spoken to the vet nurse, she has informed me that Poppy looks settled, the op went fine, her eye has been removed and the wound packed and closed, she was eating some apple but she's not coming home until they are sure that she is eating properly so they can syringe feed her and give her pain relief if she needs it (why don't all vets do that!), so if she eats okay tonight she can come home tomorrow- knowing Poppy she will be home Friday or at the weekend- I can't wait to give her a cuddle! I fed her up before she went in as she'd lost weight so hopefully she's still got her apetite- she's been eating loads and loads of SS, I've had to order a new bag before I've even opened the bag of megazorb that came with it!
I'm calling tomorrow morning and will speak to Frances then so will post another update when I have more info.

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poppy is home we've literally just got back after fighting rush hour in Harrogate, I swear my exhaust is about to drop off, it's needed fixing for about two weeks but vets bills have taken priority
She's a lot more lively than when I dropped her off there and she's eaten well. I have to give her injections for 1 week then she can have her stitches out and FHB wants to see her again in 3-4 weeks for a check up.
Unsuprisingly the vet nurse thought she was lovely, I think Poppy thought she was too since she had a long cuddle whilst she was telling me what she'd had done etc

Re: Vibes for Poppy- SHE's HOME
Charlie was fussing over her when we got back, he didn't seem to mind that she smelt funny and looked a bit odd, they were both cuddled up in the living room until bed time. There were lots of happy flops from Charlie too followed by a display of binkies when he was let outside. I'm picking the dog crate up from my parents tomorrow so he can be inside with her over night. She eating SS and even had some hay last night, and I managed to give her the injection this morning without too much fuss. It's a big relief to have her home, the op and meds cost £300- I was expecting it to be a lot more than that considering my vets charge £140 for an x-ray.
