Eddie needs a very special home! - REHOMED
This is Eddie, a neutered 1 year old Cashmere lop:
He is a unique little boy who is going to need a very special owner
Eddie came into Starlight’s rescue in August, he was suffering from weepy eyes which the previous owner had been ‘treating’ with human eye cream. After lots of antibiotics and several attempts at flushing, it became clear that Eddie’s tear ducts were permanently blocked In a last-ditch attempt to solve the problem, Eddie has had pioneering surgery on one eye, to tie off the original duct and redirect it to the surface, so that normal discharge from his eye can drain away over the surface. Sadly this doesn’t seem to have worked for Eddie and he does get a build up of ‘goo’ on this side of his face, which needs regular bathing. When he is on antibiotics it clears up really well, but it does recur if the antibiotics are stopped. Eddie is likely to need ongoing treatment for the rest of his life so will need an experienced owner who is prepared to take on a bun knowing that he will need ongoing care. Injected antibiotics seem to be working best (in conjunction with eye drops) so his new owner will also either need to be able to give injections or be willing and confident to learn. Given this reliant on antibiotics, there is always going to be a risk that Eddie will not have such a long life as a healthy bun, as over time it is possible that antibiotic resistance will occur. His new owner will need to be prepared that this may happen, although it’s not really possible to give any timescale.
Eddie is an absolute character, he loves nothing more than to charge around the house, then after a while, settle down and dose off as you gently groom him. Eddie would be very well suited to being a free range houserabbit – he is very clean, doesn’t seem to chew and uses a litter tray nicely Being indoors would make it easier for his new owner to keep a eye on his eyes and would also make it easier to keep him clean as he does tend to get bedding and litter tangled up in his lovely fur! Having said that, there’s no specific reason he couldn’t be an outdoor bunny in the right environment. He will need to have a large enclosure or free range for a good proportion of time though as he can be quite an energetic chap!
Ideally, Eddie would be bonded with a female bun who could groom his eyes and help keep him clean – who knows, this could work really well and possibly significantly improve the length of his life. Because his long term prognosis is not really known, it may be more desirable to bond him with an older bun, or one with health problems of her own, for mutual companionship. Again there is no specific reason why he could not be bonded with a young, healthy bun, other than the high likelihood that she will outlive him to some extent. Eddie is not a good hay eater so it would be lovely if a companion could teach him how yummy hay and grass can be! If you do not currently have a female looking for love, there are lots of other female rescues available that he can be paired with. Because of his circumstances and the potential problems of finding him a home, being adopted as a single house bun may not totally be ruled out providing that Eddie could be a free range house bun and his new owner is home for the majority of the time, to provide companionship and ‘grooming’.
Eddie is currently being fostered with me near to Chelmsford, Essex, although he will be adopted via Starlight’s rescue. As an outdoor bun a minimum 6*2*2 hutch with 6*4 run will be required, or indoors a suitable base with lots of free range time. He will need daily eye cleaning and daily grooming because of his cashmere coat.
If you think you fit the bill and are interested in adopting Eddie, please contact Starlight (Kris) or myself
