Who wishes their vet was more rabbit savvy?
Who wishes their vet was more rabbit savvy? I'm guessing there's quite a few of you.
I just wanted to share something I've done recently which I believe
will benefit rabbits, especially if more people did the same thing.
During a consult I handed our vet a leaflet on the RWA/RWF's Annual
Conference which is being held at the end of February. I asked if
anyone was attending from the practice. He said that one vet would
probably not go as she was currently studying for an extra cat
qualification but that he was interested and looking for an extra
specialism himself. I then said that I would be going and obviously
from a customer point of view would really like for someone from the
practice to attend. I left the consult with him reading the leaflet.
Since then I have printed some info from the RWA website and posted it to the practice manager with a short cover letter.
I'm really hopeful that someone will attend the conference which will
mean that they are more up to date on rabbit medicine and stay
informed. Coming from a paying customer I think it means more than the
charity contacting them directly.
If anyone wants copies of the info I sent just pm me with your email address and I'll send it along.
Just image the message it would send to the veterinary community if we
all asked that someone attend the Rabbit Conference. And all for the
cost of a stamp.

Re: Who wishes their vet was more rabbit savvy?
That is a really great idea Maria! I wish there was information for conferences in the States!
My vet is actually really good and knows tons about rabbits. I think it's mostly because she has 3 rabbits herself and learnt all about them for her rabbits sake. She really is very knowledgable, but I still wish I knew of conferences nearby.

I am with Cristobel who is very rabbit savvy, even our emergency vet is fantastic. Couldn’t ask for more. But there should be more vets that know more about buns illnesses around.

I think this is a brilliant idea. I do have a good vet, but only because I do a 40 mile round trip. I do have a local vet I use only for jabs, but I would certainly be willing to see if I could get them interested in rabbit medecine. I'll pm you for the info

This is such a good idea. The vet I have used for my jabs obviously adores bunnies but I don't know if they are truly rabbit savvy. We have not had to put them to the test but I know it will only be a matter of time............

Re: Who wishes their vet was more rabbit savvy?
The "pack" (5 sheets of paper!!) I put together also includes information on vet membership of the RWA so they can have good leaflets in the waiting room and get copies of Rabbiting On.
The RWA run a Treat Your Vet Campaign where a customer can buy their vets membership for just £20. Hopefully once they have been a member they would renew it themselves.
Our vets are very good and always listen and are willing to research a topic/suggestion. Even good vets can be better - more info in the waiting room for instance. What better place to educate!

Re: Who wishes their vet was more rabbit savvy?
That's an excellent idea. Nobody here really understands rabbits. When I took my lot to be neutered the vet wanted to give them an anti-emetic! When I told them (respectfully of course as I myself am clearly no vet) that rabbits are physically incapable of vomiting and so an anti-emetic was not necessary he laughed at me!
I told him not to give them the injection all the same and, lo and behold, there was no rabbit vomit!
I think it's great that you're putting pressure on your local practice to get more rabbit-savvy as they are complex little creatures and much overlooked.

I took this info into our old vets as I was passing yesterday, and told them that we had moved vets because of these issues. Thanks Maria
