Poor Peanut Butter :(
His abcess used to go away temporarily, and then come back. the plan of action was to have it 'go away' then go in and take the pocket/sac out of his leg in hopes of it never coming back. Unfortnatly, it now wont even go away temporarily. The vet cannot do this without the infection at least reducing a litte. and it wont.
He had a weird episode yesterday where his head went all funny and the other week he screamed and blood came out of his hock and his head went all funny then. He had a blood test today incase it is E.C.
This op is the final thing we are trying, but if it wont go away then we cant try it, which means the end of the road. If he had E.C it also means the end of the road because to treat him for E.C and this horrible abcess would be too much for him, hes sad and in enough pain as it is. He is being panacured as a precaution.
To date his treatment has cost way over £800, and if he has the op it will be £1000. And for what. I dont even get my bunny back
Its the first time ive actually thought im going to lose him. I dont see how he is going to make it out of this.

Re: Poor Peanut Butter :(
Hi SJ,
It breaks my heart to say I know exactly how you feel at the moment but don't give up on that little glimmer of hope you still have left, I swear they seem to know when we have given up on them. Can you give me some idea of what treatment he is currently on and what you are doing to the abcess that previously helped it to die back? Also have you had a C&S done on the abcess capsule itself (not the wall) as this was invaluable in finding the right drugs to treat Mack with.
I can also sympathise with you on the money front, by comparison I have spent a bit over £600 on Mack's treatment so far but I do not have insurance to cover this, even if we did have they would not have paid out as it would be considered a 'pre-existing' condition, due to it all being dental orientated. I think I've finally learnt that money can't buy you everything, and it does feel like you have been throwing money at the situation for no gain whatsoever.
I said the other day to Janak and Theo that in situations like this it is very easy to feel you have walked away empty handed but with time you will come to realise that although you may not have find the ending you are looking for, the knowledge you have gained on the journey is priceless, you just don't get this stuff from reading a book. It may not help you now but it will stand you, and other bunny owners, in good stead in future....so please do not consider your efforts to be in vain.
I also know that sometimes doing the right thing can mean doing nothing at all, and I am sure that if it comes to that stage you will know it too regardless of how you analyse or rationalise it.
Huge {hugs} honey and I hope his titre comes back all clear for you. x

Re: Poor Peanut Butter :(
thanks sooz going to write everything thats happened so u know what hes had and what he hasnt!
He originally had baytril and fudicerm in December for a sore hock, as did Domino as his were sore but Dominos cleared up 100% without even a scab and Peanuts got worse
in January i noticed puss so we went to a new vet which was recommended to me and much more helpful. he went under GA and they flushed out the hock, packed it with antibiotics and sent him with baytril and fudicerm cream. The hock was bandaged and had to be changed every two days.
After that i went back to uni and when i came back in febuary it looked much better. I came back in March to see it was much worse, his hock was quite 'big' and cracked and all pussy. He went back to the vet and they bandaged it to keep it clean and gave us cream and...more baytril!
It didnt go away so we were referred to a specialist, who said to take off the bandage and leave it off. He then went under and they removed the abcess.
It came back, and then he was put on Marbocyl, and now hes on Septrin.
He had a sample of the puss sent off to be analysed and they tested different meds on it to kill it, and the only one that was effective at all was Septrin.
He was due to go under today to have the 'sac' or 'pocket' removed to try n stop it coming back, but the vet was pleased today and thinks it may not be nessacery as it seems to be getting smaller but im not convinced because as soon as we stop the meds it comes back

Re: Poor Peanut Butter :(
How about an amputation?
I'm sure I've seen things about 3 legged buns.
I kow it was the front legs, but I reckon he could learn to cope with one back.

Re: Poor Peanut Butter :(
Thanks Theo, wasn't really sure.
I think it might be the best for PB, he'll never have to put up with it again.
Just a question, will it put more pressure on the other hock?

Re: Poor Peanut Butter :(
Peanut cant have his leg amputated because his ligaments slip, so if he has two legs and one slips he will fall over. where as now hes okay because he has the other leg as support.
Its never been an option as she found out about his dodgy ligaments in the beginning unfortnatly.
