Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
When is he ever going to get a break?
Scooped him up to take him outside for a run and checked his foot, as i didnt check it yesterday when i arrived home. It had burst open and there is puss all over his foot. I have cleaned it, and he has a vet appointment at 5:30.
I dont know what to think. This happened in January so its only been two months. and we have done everything physically possible to prevent it coming back.
He cant go under GA and have it removed every 2 months.
I am so distraught, this is not what i wanted to come home to. Mum has been checking on it every other day and she said it looked okay, it was obviously building up and luckily im at home now its burst.

Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
Hi guys, an update for you.
He saw a specialist today. She was fantastic, she spent at least 15 minutes looking at his foot in detail. She confirmed he does have a slipping tendon on the infected (right) hock. She also confirmed the infection is back.
Peanut has been admitted today, and is going under GA for repeat XRAYS, and they are going to use some sort of dye to see if it has gone into the bone. He is also going to have it flushed out again etc. Samples of the infection are being sent away to be 'grown' to see what IT actually is.
She has warned me peanuts prognosis is very poor. If it shows the infection is in the bone, the likelyhood of recovery is 1/3. He cannot have his leg amuptated due to the slipping tendons, therefore that removes his third of a chance he had to zero.
If its not in the bone, he does have a chance but even then its not good, just 'better'. she said trying other antibiotics could be risky, bcus it could damage his gut. luckily because he is so greedy and never goes off his food he stands better chances than a stasis prone bunny.
But she told me that in scenario one, he has the teeniest chance. and in scenario two, he has a small chance. we are literally hanging by a thread.
Just for today it is costing £480, thats without anything else, no after care etc. he has already had £300 spent.
I am eternally grateful to pet plan. as without it, i dont think i could have come up with £500 to spend on barely a chance.
please think of my boy

Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
Missy I am so so sorry to hear this. Thank goodness you have insurance. Big hugs xxx
Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
Poor little Peanut, he is having such a rough time and it seems so unfair...he dosn't fit the criteria for such severe pododermatitis in anyway bless him.
I'm so pleased your insurance company are paying out happily, I don't have insurance for my lot due to having 6 and four having pre-existing conditions, and when we were talking specialists for Mack the ball-park figure was £800....on top of the £600 I have already spent on him .
I hope you get good news on the osteomyletis front.

Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
oh im so overjoyed theyre paying. They already paid for his last one so i know they will pay this as its ongoing.
Im not saying i wouldnt have done it but on such a small chance, spending ALOT of money (its £500 before theyve made a decison!) on a tiny chance is something you have to think about, so im glad money isnt something i have to consider right now.
none of the others are insured, its just peanut. He was insured in June as i just felt somthing wasnt 'quite right' with the way he walked et c(remember i thought he had an abnormal back?)
vets couldnt find anything, so i insured him as it wouldnt count as pre existing as they couldnt find anything. I am thankful i didnt cancel it.
I am praying so hard for him. hes such a happy chappy it doesnt seem fair.

Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
because hes tendons slip and it would be too much for his remaining back leg to handle, the weigh on the one leg would cause it to slip too much making it painful to walk.
and then theres the liklihood he will get an abcess on that one too

Re: Poor Peanut Butter - U/D bad prognosis
Hes come round from the GA okay and has eaten.
What they found was it hasnt gone into the bone but its very close. its all collected up in a 'pocket' next to his tendons. They have sent a swab off, and it will be back in about 3 days, so ill probably hear monday or tuesday.
depending on what the results are, decides what treatment to take.
He said there trying everything they can and as much as it could be, today is a sucess, but the next few days/weeks will decide what can be done.
