Oh my gosh, I had no idea he would be so beautiful Wow! Lovely Rexxy whiskas
Re: Introducing my Shadow
Thank you Jay,
I think he's pretty handsome
I've got some more good pics of him from his first trip out in his run yesterday. So will upload those asap when I can find the cable to connect the camera (you know how it is having to hide wires from the bun's)

Re: Introducing my Shadow
Thank you everyone, he's becoming a little monkey now, yesterday he was stealing salad off my plate at tea time (tbh I was sneaking it to him when he was nudging me, when the OH wasn't watching, naughty I know but couldn't resist him)
Becki - I think he's a standard Rex I'm not 100% sure though as he's a pets at home bunny and they didn't say, in fact it was me that told one of them he was a Rex . He's my first bunny, so do you know how you can tell? I'm going by how big he is for 10 weeks and the length of his ears! I'd researched the Rex online after seeing one at a farm and thought they'd be the perfect rabbit for us. I'd vowed not to buy from a pet shop but as soon as I saw him I fell for him and just had to have him!

Re: Introducing my Shadow
Awww Barney is beautiful, he's a stunning boy!
My OH thinks I'm feeding Shadow too much so, he'll not be slim for much longer
He only gets a smallish hand full of pellets twice a day and a small plate of veggies at night and then the hay in his hutch.
Nose rubs from Shadow to his fellow Rex Barney!

Re: Introducing my Shadow
I think he is too. I'm by no means a bunny breed expert, but Brynn is (supposedly) a Mini Rex Cross and at 13 weeks she is about 1/2 the size of Shadow! I think that's good enough logic!AprilGirl wrote: I think he's a standard Rex I'm not 100% sure though

Same here!
I only went into the pet store to look at the bunnies (as I was planning on getting one from a local breeder). I saw Brynn, she ran right up to me, I held her, and I was in love. Yet, I held strong and left the pet store without her. As the evening went on I couldn't get her off my mind, so I went back and brought her home! So glad I did!!!!

Re: Introducing my Shadow
So much better to go away and think about it and then decide. Too many people buy the bunny then think about how they will care for it.
She is a lovely bun.

Re: Introducing my Shadow
I can feel a Rexxy thread coming on
How old is he now Emma and do you know his weight?
I think he's a standard Rex, his body looks long, but I'm no expert either. Mini-Rexes weigh c. 2-2.5 kg when mature.
Lovely to see Barney too

Cool, I'd like to learn about Rex's from "real" people.
He's 10 weeks now (well when I got him they "thought" he was 8 weeks)
Just put him on my scales and he's 1.6 kg! He has a very long body and very long ears, perfect for kissing behind

At 10 weeks old with that weight he's a full Rex I reckon. He'll continue growing for 8-12 months. His ears are his thermostat. The blood vessels that run through them grow when they are hot and shrink when they are cold to reduce or save the heat, so his ears will get bigger in warm weather
They're called Rex after the latin for King. They were called King because of their unique coat, where the guard hair underneath the top hair is the same length. In other Rabbits, the Guard hair is shorter. This is what givers the Rex it's amazing dense and plush coat They were developed in France, and were used for their coats
As a breed they are genetically disposed to good teeth, some digestion problems, and sore hocks, which as the heel to toe bit of their feet. Because the hair is short, on certain surfaces like nylon carpets, the hair can wear off and the skin gets exposed and gets sore and can get infected. It's something that is manageable, but it doesn't affect every Rex, mine has never shown a problem.
When you'ce clipping his nails, you need to be careful and make sure the nail is at least a 4 mm's beyond the foot hair prior to clipping In standard buns, the outer hair extends longer over the nail, and you clip to the length of the hair. Because the hair is shorter in Rexes, you could cut into the quick of the nail and make it bleed. Cutting tha nail beyond the hairline will avoid this.
They are very smart, inquisitive curious and clever. They need a lot of mental stimulation if you keep them on their own, treat balls, toys, tasks, challenges (like covering up their entrance to a tunnel - he'll spend all day pulling at things to get it clear!) and company are really important to any Rabbit, but certain breeds need a bit more, and Rexes are one.
