Re: Duchess
Oh Abi I am sorry to hear this
I am wondering if starting her on Milk Thistle may help in a 'paliative care' way

Re: Duchess
Milk thistle is a fantastic plant. Seeds are ground and used, but the buns can have the fresh plant too. So sorry it's not been good for Duchess, but very pleased she's back with you.

Re: Duchess
A lot of the Milk Thistle Tinctures contain Ethanol ( a form of alcohol ) but this one doesn't

I would start with one dropperful a day but consult your Vet about how much to give Duchess

It's an easy plant to grow and you can buy it in liquid ( as Jane has highlighted ) or capsules. I grow the plants every year and the buns have the leaves just in with a mix of leaves that I give them as part of their general green feed. One thing with giving beneficial plants as a 'complementary treatment' is knowing the potency of the active ingredient. It's impossible to know the potency of any plants home grown, without lab analysis, but you can buy measured herbal products from approved places, so you know what the potency is. Diluted tinctures are measured as centesimal or 'c' so put simply an example would be, 1 part of the mother plant diluted with 99 parts water = 1c. If you go to Boots or Holland and Barratt for example, you may see tinctures marked as 6c, 12c and 30c, these are regular potency. Contra indications with conventional meds is something I always check with a vet before I administer anything as a treatment, so as you will be speaking to the vet anyway, please also ask him about this too. Some others which are recommended for the liver are chelidonium 30c (good general remedy) and Berberis 6 or 30c. Lots of vibes for Duchess.
