good luck, these are easy to breed out of control. I have had 300+ from one batch of eggs.

What unusual pets. Do they need a lot of care and a heated home?
I've always liked snails and when I trod on one by mistake I took it inside and tried to patch up its shell with a sticky plaster as I felt so guilty. Sadly, the plaster fell off

They need to be kept at room temperature otherwise they go into hibernation. They are fairly low maintenance and the main thing to remember with them is to remove the eggs when they lay them and freeze them, as this is the most humane way to get rid of them. They are fascinating creatures.

Re: 46 Giant African Landsnails need a home - Surrey
Mmmm - room temperature doesn't sound too difficult. I'm beginning to like the idea of having my own 'Brian'. Are two OK or are they happier in a larger group and what do they need to live in. I'm assuming they don't just go free range in the house. I've got eight cats and two house bunnies so they wouldn't last long here if they did
How long do they live too?
I am off to work now but will try and google it later and see if I can find a site with easy to understand instructions.
They will probably all have been rehomed by the time I buy whatever they need to live in but it's worth finding out anyway.
At least they wouldn't slowly devour my lounge like Gemma and George are doing

I'm sure we will still have some when you are ready, they don't usually go quickly! You can keep 2 together and they will need a tank of at least 60cm high x 30cm widex 30cm high. It MUST have a lid or they will be free range They live 5-8 years on average, but some have got to 10 years old so they are a long commitment. They need soil at the bottom of the tank (not from the garden as this will have small stones in and wont be clean).

The main thing to remember is to remove the eggs and freeze them or you will have hundreds of snails.

Re: 46 Giant African Landsnails need a home - Surrey
Do you mean 60 cm wide, rather than high?
The bookshelf where I could put them is 70 cm wide so that would be ideal. I have a small fish tank there at the moment but have bought Dennis and Bernie a bigger one so they can stretch their fins a bit more.
Will start looking on e-bay for a tank. I'd love a couple of snails. They look gorgeous. They don't eat live food like snakes do they? I don't eat meat so would find that a bit disconcerting.
It's great they live so long. I stopped keeping hamsters as I kept getting attached to them and then they died.
My mission for this evening is to find a tank to start bidding for.
What are the rules for rehoming from you. Do you need to do a tank check once I have found one? I rehomed a bunny from Angie at BARCS earlier this year but he had completely different criteria.
Are they easy to sex. If I had two girls or two boys then I wouldn't get the eggs - or is that not how it works?
Fascinating.

Re: 46 Giant African Landsnails need a home - Surrey
Haha! Sorry! Yes I do! I was rushing.....
When you have the tank, send me a PM with the dimensions and a photo if possible. The snails have both male and female sex organs so they will produce eggs regardless. They are very easy to spot, you just need to remove them when you see them and freeze them as thats the most humane way to dispose of them.
They eat vegetables, no meat! Carrot, cabbage, cucumber etc. They also need cuttle fish for calcium.
We do ask for a donation to help other animals in our rescue
Do you live near to us? We are in Old Coulsdon.

Re: 46 Giant African Landsnails need a home - Surrey
Great pets. No iceberg lettuce and some places say pasta but stay away from it as it can cause intestinal problems. Cucumber, round lettuce, romain lettuce, courgets, the outside of tomatoes, apples and more are loved by them. No 1 rule though. Always give them calcium. Cuttlefish is ideal as they will eat it on their own but any of the reptile calcium powders (calypso/komodo) are good too. Oh and wheetabix soaked to a porrigey consistancy is a good treat but messy. Plenty ventilation and a humid environment. Preferably a spraying every day and they can sometimes like a gentle cup of luke warm water over them. Mines loved it! My pair were small with 7 inch shells lol.
Im not mad I work in a reptile shop and kepp and breed many wierd creatures!

Re: 46 Giant African Landsnails need a home - Surrey
Am on the lookout for a tank.
They eat similar things to buns - good. I much prefer animals who don't eat meat.
I live near Portsmouth so not that near but do-able. I went to Dorking to pick up George for the final part of a bunny run which I think is in Surrey. I know where Guildford is so am sure I would be able to find Old Coulsdon.
Can't put photos on the internet as not that IT literate but can send a photo on my mobile 'phone
Will let you know as soon as I get a tank and hopefully there will still be some snails left who would live to come and join my mini-zoo.

There are lots left so I'm sure you will be ok. I could reserve two for you if you would prefer? Give me a PM when you are all set and I shall give you my mobile number so you can send me the photo.
