Bunny won't stop sneezing - it's not snuffles
Hi
I bought my baby rabbit home a few weeks ago, as soon as I got her home she pretty much started sneezing straight away. She wasn't sneezing at the breeders, I had visited her at the breeders 3 times before I bought her home and did not once hear her sneeze or any of the other rabbits there sneeze.
I took the carefresh litter and hay out of her cage thinking she might be allergic, even though she had hay in her cage at the breeders. I took her to the vet, he put her on baytril, an anti biotic, and gave her an injection for allergies.
That didn't help - she kept sneezing, I'm talking attacks of sneezing where I have counted 619 sneezes in a row !
A week later I took her to another vet, a rabbit specialist this time, the vet flushed fluid through her tear ducts, which were fine. She put her on anti biotics - bactrum this time and prescribed an anti imflammatory liquid as well. She thoroughly checked her teeth and ears which were fine. There was nothing stuck up her nose.
Again - she keeps sneezing.
The vet says the next step is x-rays to check if the roots of her back teeth are protruding through to her sinuses - I've done some research on this and it only seems to happen to old rabbits - she's only 10 weeks old.
She eats, drinks, sleeps, plays, poops and is otherwise pefect, aside from the sneezing
I would appreciate any suggestions or help, I want to help my baby bunny and stop her from sneezing.

Re: Bunny won't stop sneezing - it's not snuffles
Hiya,
Welcome to HH
Im afraid I dont know much about this. But its likely that someone may be along shortly that might - so keep checking back.
All I will say is that you need to pop her hay back in because she will need it (buns should eat 80% hay) - if you havent done that already.
Are you using saw dust/wood shavings at all? If so you should remove this from the hutch and use newspaper instead.
Hopefully someone who can help you will be along soon - again welcome to HH, please post any questions you have, we are always happy to help if we can. x x

Yes the rabbit vet told me to put the hay back in, so I have done that, thank you.
Not using saw dust or wood shavings, just hay and newspaper at the moment.

Could the hay be dusty? I used to get hay from Pets at Home and it was always very dusty stuff. I now use a equine supplier and the hay is much fresher. Does the hay look very brown and crumbly?
Also, have you contacted the breeder to alert them to the problem? It could be a problem isolated with your bun or it could be something viral. If so, he shouldn't sell any more rabbits until it is checked out. It might also be worth asking for a bag of hay that she is used to to see if that makes a difference.

Re: Bunny won't stop sneezing - it's not snuffles
I took her for an xray today and unfortunately it showed that her upper back teeth roots are growing into her sinus cavity. This normally occurs in older rabbits due to poor diet apparently, but because she is so young it would be due to genetics and inheritance. So yes, I will contact the breeder to let her know.
Surgery to remove the teeth would be high risk, not one I am prepared to take, so will try and control her sneezing through medication.
And I thought getting a baby rabbit would be easy on the hip pocket!
Thanks for input.

Re: Bunny won't stop sneezing - it's not snuffles
So sorry to hear this with such a young bunny. At least you know it isn't something contagious. I would definitely have a word with the breeder and maybe suggest a contribution to the vet's bill which I should imagine is rather large. It is the least he or she can do after breeding such a genetic problem into his stock. I wonder how many other bunnies are suffering with this condition. It is so good that you had her checked out. How many others won't bother. If he has any decency, he will refund you and warn all the other owners.
If he isn't interested, you might want to consider contacting your local paper to run an article about being careful where you get a pet rabbit. Some bad publicity would not be welcome to him and he would probably help you out.
RSPCA would also be interested too.

Thank you. The breeder has promised not to breed with her parents again which is something.

Re: Bunny won't stop sneezing - it's not snuffles
Sorry your buns had bad luck, it's gutting when you find out things like that. Incomprehensive breeding does produce these problems, as the rabbits head is no longer the correct shape for the teeth etc.
I've not had a dental bunny, but I'm sure there is somethng that can be done, and someone will be along who's had this before. She's a lucky bunny to have you caring for her
