Vibes for Thumper please!
After our trip to Bristol on wednesday, thumper has gone off his food. He's been to Paula, and there's nothing physically wrong, so we think it's just stress. It was a long trip, and he has been subdued since we got back.
On top of that, because I'm going away tomorrow, Thumper and Ruby are staying with Theo for the week, so more stress for him. Theo has said she's worried as he's just sitting in one spot, not moving around, and he's usually a really nosey boy!. Please could we have some vibes for my boy, and for Theo, it's tough looking after someone else's pet when their not well.

Re: Vibes for Thumper please!
Have just come back from the vets with Thumper, he is totally empty and not eating but we don't know why, he has had a shed load of medications and I have just syringed him, he has taekn it quite well and I am monitoring him, if he is no better in the morning then we will go back to the vets, he is quite bright in himself and moving around, he just won't eat
Very worrying!

Try a bit of bribery, like his fave food or treat or some carrot juice then at least he is getting some nutrients

Re: Vibes for Thumper please!
I thought this would be useful to you: I have just used the information merely for your reference.
The following are points you may like to discuss with your vet when seeking treatment:
Anorexia (loss of appetite) is a symptom of pain in Rabbits. It needs IMMEDIATE Veterinary Attention. Your Vet should :
1 Examine your Rabbits abdomen feeling for abnormalities (including palpation of the bladder to check for bladder sludge or stones) and listen for gut sounds with a stethescope. Also check Rabbits bum for signs of scouring. If possible obtaining a urine specimen and testing it for infection.
2 Examine your Rabbits Teeth (using an special instrument to view the molar teeth or 'back' teeth). Also feel all around your Rabbits jaw and cheeks for signs of pain
3 Check your Rabbits Temperature (Rabbits in pain often have an abnormally low temperature)
4 Listen to your Rabbits Heart and Lungs via a stethescope
5 Check your Rabbits ears for signs of infection
6 Check that your Rabbit is not dehydrated
Your Vet should also ask you what you feed your Rabbit and if they have recently been given a new type of food. Also if you have noticed any change in your Rabbits toileting behaviour.
Reduced gut motility or GI Stasis is often a SECONDARY SYMPTOM of another PRIMARY PROBLEM. The primary problem is often related to a dietray issue or a Dental problem. Treating the GI Stasis in the first instance is obviously necessary and this should include a gut motility stimulant and pain relief. Medication MUST be given by injection to Buns with reduced gut motility. Oral meds wont be absorbed if the GI tract is not functioning effeciently. It is then important to try to identify the CAUSE of the GI malfunction.
If your Vet also prescribes antibiotics do not be affraid to ask 'WHY' Without clinical evidence of bacterial infection Rabbit specialists believe antibiotic use in treating GI Stasis is inadvisable.
Your Vet should also explain the importance of syringe feeding an Anorexic Rabbit and give advice as to how much and how often. Probiotics to balance the 'healthy gut bacteria' may also be prescribed. The 'old fashioned' idea was to feed the Bun live yoghurt. But Rabbits are Lactose (milk sugar) intolerent and so a probiotic like Bio-Lapis is more appropriate.
If you are not happy with, or do not understand what your Vet advises or prescribes for your Rabbit do not be affraid to say so.

Poor Thumper! I hope it's just the changes to his routine that have upset him - Tibbs is a nightmare for that as well.
Sending lots of vibes and prayers here Theo, he's in the best of hands.

Re: Vibes for Thumper please!
Well, I have determined that Thumper is pooing, I separated them last night for 2 hours and I was able to see that he had a nice pile of poos in his tray so the gut meds are working but I am having to syringe him because he just won't eat, so we are going back to the vets this afternoon, he is quite bright in himself, I feel sorry for Lynne, she is ringing me because she is so worried but is helpless because she is so far away, never mind, we will get him through this.
So this afternoon we are back at the vets to see if they can shed any light on it, it's really strange because he wants to eats and has just taken 42mls with no problem at all, it all points to his teeth being the problem, will see what happens this afternoon
