*cries* Charm may need a dental
Oh no, Charm may need a dental and the only vet I trust with him is on holiday.
See charm usually lunges at his food bowl and almost tips it over in his eagerness to eat. I think it's due to his starvation when I got him. But last night when I put the food in he didn't care. And there was more left over than usual. Also this morning I put some herbs plus in and we affectionately call it charms crack because I'm lucky if I can put it in the bowl without him diving for it. And he wasn't interested. But while I'm sat here ringing around to find a vet with reasonable prices he's got his nose buried in his food bowl munching away.
Do you guys think he needs a dental? Or could it just be the smell of Mitzy the cat making him nervous? What do I do?

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
have you checked his incisors? if they are misaligned or wearing in a diagonal then he will need checking.
of course going to the vets is the main thing!

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
they're the front ones right? he had those removed last year. BUT the vet didn't do a good job because a sliver of tooth keeps growing back and breaking and vanishing.
He's booked in the vet tomorrow in deepcar. Still nervous about it though as last time andy went away and my sister took a chin down there the covering vet actually googled if a medicine was safe or not!!!!!!!!! Needless to say we've never booked in while andy has been away since.
I actually considered going to hallam vets as much as I detest them. But almost died when they quoted me £100 for a dental! nearly double what deepcar charges!

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
it's a tough one. I meant incisors yes, sorry I didn't know he'd had them removed.
If you feel under his chin along his jawline on either side, if his molars have spurred enough they will feel bumpy. When buns get molar malocclusion there is nowhere for the teeth to grow so they tend to grow back into the roots (if that makes sense) meaning there are palpable 'bumps' along the jawline. Jack had this after her incisor removal but it took me a while to realise she had spurs (she had just had her op) so they were fairly big. And yes I felt like the worst bunny-mummy in the world
Hope he's ok - when you booked for vets?
PS I'm going to move this to "infirmary" as it's technically care advice etc. hope that's ok

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
Yeah Charm had his teeth removed like 11 months ago, maybe ten. They were misaligned so they just never wore against each other and would continually overgrow so once I found a vet that would do it I had them removed. I figured it was the best for him as otherwise I'd have to continually clip them and I thought that was likely to be too much stress for him. Especially as I'd spent so long with the syringes and medication, me going near his mouth...even now he doesn't like it. Even tranced he flips out.
I can't feel anything, but I don't think they'd be too badly overgrown as he was eating, just not as much as he usually does. The vet appointment is at 9:50 so another six hours to go. I'm hoping it's nothing he just hasn't been hungry.
Oh sorry, yeah go ahead and move it ^_^

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
well that's a good sign! If he does have spurs they are unlikely to be mahoosive ones.
bless him, I had Jack's incisors done for the exact same reason although now she is a dental bun and I have been told to expect regular molar grinds. So instead of just going to the vet and getting the incisors cut I will now have to go to the vet and have her molars done under GA.. I was furious when I found out this was a possibility. Should have known really but there you go.
Good luck at the vets - what are you doing up so early!?

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
Yeah ^_^ Which is good. It means I caught it pretty early if it is that. Which makes me happy. I'd feel terribly if they were massive and I'd just not noticed T_T
Charm hasn't had his back teeth done since before his front ones were pulled, but I've always known that having the front ones removed meant there was a higher chance of him needing his back ones cut.
I'm nocturnal.

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
He's a trouper. I'm sure he'll be fine. He's a very healthy, happy rabbit...escept he's eating less than usual.
Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
It's not uncommon for a incisor to regrow after removal, the estimate I was given was 10% but I believe it's actually higher from others experience. The poorer quality the tooth the harder it can be to fully extract it and you are left hoping that the root pulp is of a poor quality. I suspect the 'sliver' is a peg tooth, the root pulp is much harder to destroy on these than the incisors and they are the teeth that most commonly regrow even after quite brutal surgery.
On the other hand they are easier to deal with than a regrown incisor. If the sliver is making contact with the opposing soft tissue it could be a reason for his reluctance to eat.

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
Well good news and bad news.
Yes his back teeth are overgrown but not by too much. He can still eat and they've not cut his mouth. But because of an admin error no one was able to cut them for me today. You see with Deepcar being such a small vets they have to take everyone over to Barnsley for anesthetics and such. So...he's booked in to go tomorrow.
Peg tooth...yeah that sounds like the right name for what's re-growing. It's vanished again now so we did think he could have snapped it and it be stuck somewhere in his mouth. Just one of the possibilities. Usually I don't have to deal with it. it starts regrowing and then just vanishes. I've been wondering if I should ask the vet I trust to take a look at it and see if it's worth another operation.

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
Maybe. I was told that there is a risk of one of Jack's peg teeth regrowing as it snapped during removal and they couldn't get it all out. If he has to go under for the molars anyway then maybe it's worth discussing having that fished out once it's regrown enough...
glad he's ok!

Re: *cries* Charm may need a dental
I didn't ask about getting his peg tooth removed while he was under because my vet is on holiday and I really wouldn't trust anyone but Andy to do the operation. I barely trust them to do a dental as it is. I'll probably ask Andy when he gets back.
Charms fine now, I have to go for a check up on Wednesday for an after dental thing. My sisters bun had to go in with mine too. Hers had cut his tongue though, charm had no damage to his mouth at all.
