Rhia Update
No wonder the poor girl hasn't been herself. She went in for investigation this morning & she's had a huge abscess that has burst & completely ruptured her ear drum. There is some serious infection down there The vet has sent off a swab for a C & S test, Not sure what this is for? I feel really upset actually, I just can't imagine the pain that she has been in - She has been so unbelievably brave. I can't wait for her to come home to her Mum XX

Re: Rhia Update
The C&S test will be too grow a sample of the bacteria in the ear and determine which antibiotics will be the most successful in treating the abscess.
Poor Rhia, that must be incredibly painful for her, how long is she being kept in for?

Re: Rhia Update
She's doing OK Thanks Katie, We were both shattered last night from such a long day & she just laid wrapped in a blanket on my knee whilst I injected her, lapped up her medicine in baby puree & went to bed. She's a right little trooper. Went to Tesco on lunch & have stocked up on her favourite baby foods, sponges to clean her bum & legs (Wees when shes stressed, looks like a right scraggamuffin) - Just waiting for 5 O clock to go & see her now!

Re: Rhia Update
Having some issues re Metacam dose. She has been prescribed 4ml daily which cannot be right, and could possibly be dangerous. Waiting on advice from Kay's vet, but I have been in a right tizz about it. I cant give her none & her be in pain, but if I overdose her...Well.
She wasn't well at all last night & I felt completely hopeless (She'd had 3ml of metacam!!! How she was in pain, I have no idea!) but touch wood, she started picking up about 8pm & is happier this morning X

5ml, Is that? Or 0.5ml? Rhia is on the dog one which is 1.5ml/kg strength. It cant be right. XX

Re: Rhia Update
Daisy is on a a 5kg dose twice daily. This is because our specialist said that bunnies need 5x the dosage and twice as often as another animal would.
So daisy weighs just over 1kg So therefore gets a 10kg dose in a day.
Daisy's specialist really knows his stuff and i would completely trust him with anything bun related.
normally with Metacam / Meloxydil the syringe that comes with it is marked up as KG doses. so 5 on the syringe would be a 5kg dose.

Re: Rhia Update
Thanks for that Katie. So, how many ml's of metacam is Daisy having a day? And this is the dog metacam, not the cat? Thanks X

Re: Rhia Update
The syringe I have shows it in KG doses but when I compare it to a normal syringe it looks like it could be 0.10 ml per day.
Its dog metacam. You might want the check the difference between the kg dose and the ml dose if you can because I can be sure they are the same. But it does seem like if your vet has said 0.4 per day that would be not enough. 4ml sounds excessive.

Re: Rhia Update
Hi Becki ,
I have the cat metacam...
Metacam is given in Kg not in mls. Can you get a KG syringe from the vet ?
I have taken a Kg syringe and filled it with 5 KG ( standard dose for bunnies) and then switched it to mls syringe.
5kg = 1/2 of 1ml , thats 5 of the smaller bars on the ml syringe 0.5ml (half way before you reach 1 ml).
hope this helps , not sure if it will as its cat metacam.

HI Katie,
Its interesting about metacam... Pumpkin is only on 5 kg once a day.. I asked if he could have more ie up to 10 kg if needed but the vet said no as she is worried as metacam can cause stomach ucleration and therefore to only give it to Pumpkin when absolutely needed.
This had made me more wary of when I give it to him..

I had the same concern when daisy was first put on his dosage and was told that while this can happen - for daisy, it was a matter of weighing up what he "needed" to make sure he was pain free, against the risk.
Please understand that I am by no means undermining what anyones vet has prescribed. I just want to share my experience. You might also want to use this information as a promt to encourage the vet to research further - as I understood it at the time, this was new guidance and may no have filtered through to many vets yet.

Hi Katie,
Oh I didnt think you were undermining anything.. I was just sharing my experience also .. my vet can be to over cautious in my opinion.
I agree with you , I think they can have up to 10 kg from what I have read and if Pumpkin was still in pain I would give up to that dose to help him if he needed it. Like you say you have to weigh up the risks....and make sure they are pain free.... its difficult if a bun has a long term complaint and wieghing up if they are in pain as they can be good at hiding it.
