Baytril Empty Baytril

Post by Dawnbunny Wed Jun 01, 2011 12:19 pm

Hi,

Pumpkin is now on Baytril for an ear infection that ahs gone on for 8 wks.. Obviously he doesnt like the taste of liver Baytril... so much so he has decided to go into hiding in the garden with a view to me not spotting him to get the Baytril in him!

I have read up on previous posts about making Baytril taste nicer for buns, posts are a few years old and I just wanted to check if there had been any updates to info...

Some have mixed :

Baytril with ribena

Baytril and grape juice

Baytril and fruit based baby food

Baytril and cherry syrup.

Baytril followed with a shot of Metacam.

Im sure this would help to make it taste nicer Im just worried about the high sugar content in any fruit mixes and whether this might give him diarrhoea.

Would appreciate any comments.

thanks

I haven't had (touch wood..head...) to use Baytrill before, but the specialist who writes for Hoping Mad gives it in Ribena, low sugar. so I'm guessing that's ok!

I think you need to try different things, it's difficult to say what's right, because they are all so different, and have different tastes. I hadn't heard about the baby food one before. I guess you have to weigh up the benfits of getting the ABX with the sugar thing, but try and keep it as low cal as possible. Not sure if that helps or not? Smile

Hi Jay,

I have just tried it with ribena.... it just wont mix though, the ribena is a different consistency to the baytril.... Oh well Pumpkin didnt like the start but was left with a ribena kick at the end of the syringe Laughing think it was preferably to the liver baytril only taste ! I swiftly follwed this with a tiny piece of banana /peach.

Fingers crossed lets see how we go.

thank you Jay.

Laughing they do learn what rewards are quite easily!

If you're going to give the ABX in fruit/fruit solution, personally, I wouldn't give a fruit treat afterwards, but a sprig of favourite herb, or a pellet, or a nibble of spring green. If Pumpkin gets used to having fruit so regularly, it could become a problem.

Hope things go smoothly, we're all willing this to go ok Smile

I had the same problem mixing the Baytril with Ribena, I found it separated in the syringe. We also tried pineapple juice but that didnt work either.

Daisy is on baytril at the moment too, and while he is happy to take the metacam straight from the syringe the baytril remains a force feed.

So good luck, if you find a way that works let me know......

As far as the sugar thing is concerned, its just my opinion though, but Id say the need to get the abx in overrides the fact that they could be having a bit to mush sugar. Getting the meds in is the most important thing.
good luck hun.

I tried the little munchkin straight afterwards with rocket / basil/ yesterday was with dandies/spring greens and he was having none of it , yesterday he did take a carrot cookie ... today resorted to peach , he nibbled a bit then left it... banana won hands down !

Good idea to get the low sugar ribena ...

I think tomorrow I will try ribena and baytril with a carrot cookie to follow... in this way I wont worry as much about overload of sugar / upset tummy.

Hi Katie,

Are you giving both Baytril and Metacam at the same time ?

Out of interest how much Baytril is Daisy having a day ?

Hi Jo ,

Are you mixing it in the syringe with Baytril or giving it afterwards ? Is this freshly squeezed or from the carton ?

thanks

Fudge munches his baytril as I put it in a mini shredded! No stress no hassle! His grandpa would put baytril on a big basil leaf and the strong basil taste meant he woofed it down!

I don't think Felix can have a sense of taste! He takes his Baytril like a man. He was getting 0.8ml every day and I just held him in a towel and gave him his baytril from a syringe. He didn't seem bothered at all.

hiya,

We give daisy his metacam at 6am and 6pm every day and then he has one dose of Baytril at about 8pm. He has 0.8ml once daily.

Luckily he loves the taste of the metacam so he licks it straight of the syringe when its offered to him, but we have to capture him and syringe the baytril......its a two man job with him too.

Hi,

Today Baytril + Ribena mix went well... I shook the syringe vigorously this did mix the baytril with ribena, which was much better..... Pumpkin took it well.

Followed by a carrot cookie... will continue with this system for the rest of the week.

I mix it with the baytril love, with a treat afterwards. I also use pineapple juice it if my guineas aren't very well.

I hope he is better today.
