Litter Tray Digging?
Agh! I need to input as to what my rabbit Lucy is doing. Recently she has started to dig in her litter tray. She isn’t kicking out her litter but she’s trying (for some reason) to get to the bottom of her litter tray and its really making the flat smell. If I clean her everyday so much litter gets wasted but either way it still smells because shes digging up her pee. When she’s outside she never bothers digging its only in her litter tray. It has become very smelly and extremely annoying. What is she doing?
Re: Litter Tray Digging?
Change the litter, possible shes telling you its to smelly. The heat wont ge helping either. Try clean outs more often but use less litter at a time.

That’s strange because its disinfected her tray every time I clean it (which is often).

Could be brand your using, this heat too. Smokey was digging his earlier but hes out side, they just love to dig, try putting a box of straw/hay in for him to dig,

Re: Litter Tray Digging?
Does she have a a digging box. Buns like to dig and she may simply be telling you she wants to dig. She could also be telling you she wants her nails trimmed. Or that she objects to something in the litter tray. Or that she is just generally annoyed.

Maybe she isn't liking the disinfectent smell? Try a digging box as Cheryl suggested, but Lucy may well pee in it She might just like to dig, give her a towel, mine dig into those (and pee on it )

Re: Litter Tray Digging?
Tried all of that. She even has a big garden to dig in. I have watched her and she is digging down to eat soiled hay. Now I know a lot about buns and their odd dirty habits but this is kinda new to her. All of this has suddenly started. I was wondering if it’s a time or year thing.
Re: Litter Tray Digging?
Doe's love to dig and I think this is what she is doing just digging, if I were you I'd buy a hooded litter tray like what cat's have, and put some newspaper in with megazorb or whatever litter you use and then fill it with hay, take the flap cat door off it so Lucy can freely go in and out , there is a charcoal filter in a compartment on top of the litter tray and that should stop all the smell.
Besides being a little tray for a bunny it can also be a digging box or hide out for them to.

Re: Litter Tray Digging?
First thing that comes to me is that she is telling you it smells. Some buns want their box cleaned each and every time it is used. Not that anyone can do that, but they still want it! Our Thumper wants it and if hubby doesn't do it every day he acts out. Since Hubby doesn't, he acts out. He has been persistent in his acting out for many, many months. Their sense of smell is many times greater than our own and the higher the temperature, the more intense the odor.
Does Lucy have a smooth cool surface on which to lie other than the bottom of her litter tray? She may be so well trained she won't remove the litter, but she may in her head be thinking about getting to it for coolness.

Jeeves (buck) used to love digging in his litter tray. Since he came home from a month away he hasn't done it!
