Causes of a dirty bottom?
Just to make sure i havent missed anything, and i can try and work out whats causing Marleys dirty bottom by process of elimination.
On Tuesday i noticed he had some mats down below, i figured he'd had a bit of a dirty bottom and some of it had dried on. I came home from college today to find spots of what were obviously mushed and dried cecals, as he hasnt got diarrhoea and is producing nice golden poos. His diet hasnt changed, theyre both eating plenty of hay, they had some readigrass stuffed in a log last night but theyre used to having it, he had the usual veggies too, if anything, they have been having less veggies and less pellets that usual.
I asked Mum if he had been ok through the day, she said she found him flopped out in his tunnel ignoring her when she came to say hello this afternoon. Hes had a bum bath, a fenugreek crunchie and is now running around my room with Dolly. I wondered if it was a bit of stress from coming in, but he had a dirty bottom yesterday before i moved them. :S Your thoughts, anyway? He rarely gets a dirty bottom, if he does its a one off, cleaned up and forgotten about. Please can you list some of the other causes, so i can try work it out, hopefully he doesnt continue to have anymore!!

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
hmmm, normally I tend to think its something they ate. Could he have nommed something you didn't know about? Myrtle always goes for leaves.
Or maybe he was distracted when it was coming out and didn't have time to eat it?
Normal poos now sounds like a good thing though.

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
No, he is producing normal golden poos, its the cecals that hes leaving all over the place. It certainly wasnt 1, the pen was a mess today and hes had a dirty bottom for a couple of days. I really dont think hes eaten anything bad, hes quite good like that, its Dolly that eats things she shouldnt. They have only been in the playhouse anyway, which is all safe for them, and in here im always watching them when theyre free ranging.
I think he has maybe got himself a bit stressed over something, though i will never know what, as hes behaving normally now.

I can only suggest the move as a cause, but if he was doing it before I just don't know .....

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
You could try popping some pro-c in their water? A few week of it might sort the problem out.
It worked wonders for Thumper, we wouldn't have been without it. And of course it won't do Dolly any harm

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
i get the same with bluebell ever since i've had her she poos absolutely normal but cecals are causing sticky bottom every now and then i've changed allsorts of eating habbits with her the vet finds nothing wrong with her either none of the others have this problem and have same diet i've even had her on 3% nuggies and only hay,
perhaps theres an occasional bun that just has a cecal continance problem occasionaly which is the opinion i am comming to with my blue and give her botty washes when needed, she's been on pr-c since i rescued her.
i know some children have similar probs
oddly i recently gave bluebell a botty wash and since she trots up to me for fussies more and loves to sit by my feet and nudge for fussies when she wants one

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
Thanks guys. I had thought about using some Pro-C, went to dig mine out and realised id binned it because it went all hard
Anyway, ill try and get hold of some. Its just odd as i cant seem to pinpoint a specific cause, whereas its usually quite easy, as ive over fed something, but not this time. In the 4 years ive had him, hes probably had a dirty bottom not even a handful of times. Lauren suggested stress, she could be right, but i cant put my finger on anything. They only have hay for now anyway, they know the drill already - i came up to see them after dinner and they were going mad expecting some veggies

Re: Causes of a dirty bottom?
It could well be something that they ate that has just upset their tummy a little, we also find sometimes if our's are hot at all they have a dirty bottom. If they are moulting at all it could be that. Sometimes a dirty bottom can be a good sign...better out than in
