Bertie on house arrest
The vet trip was a nightmare. It took 2 of us with a towel several attempts, scratches and attempted bites to examine and give him more eye ointment. We have metacam and more eye ointment. We are going to try until tomorrow to give him the ointment, and if we have no joy, he is to be admitted for a few days of treatment.
He may yet need surgery. They would put in a contact lens, suture his eye, put a collar of shame on him and allow his eye to heal.
This next few days will be awful. There is enough stray in him that Bertie hates being confined. He refuses to use a litter tray. He gets very distressed when he can't come and go. Attempting more ointment will be hell.
Wish us luck please?

Re: Bertie on house arrest u/d no surgery!
I feel for you. Our Paddy is the most affectionate, friendly cat but bitterly resents anything being done to him, even just wiping his eye. He is such a big cat that towel wrapping is a nightmare, even in a large bath size towel.
Like Bertie too, he came to us as a stray, and even though he has a litter tray he prefers not to use it.
To our amazement though we have got him to accept the inhaler for his asthma, with handouts of treats before and after.
Thinking of you all and hoping that Bertie's eye heals very quickly xx

Well, it's not going too badly. OH grabs him and I put the ointment in as OH is freaked out by eyes he gets treats after each time too. He's doing OK staying in too. I think he's using the litter tray. The turd I dealt with yesterday was so big I don't think the others are large enough to have produced it
The eye doesn't seem to be improving though, and surgery is looking increasingly likely.
It would be the bloody cat who isn't insured, wouldn't it?

Re: Bertie on house arrest u/d no surgery!
The vet says cat eyes heal well and quite quickly, so if after several days of ointment the eye isn't responding, surgery will be needed.
I trust her - she is a firm believer in avoiding surgery where possible, and wouldn't recommend it if not necessary.

Honestly, it was so pungent I could almost taste it!
I hope he doesn't need the op - he'll need a collar of shame! And we leave for Spain in just over 2 weeks, which is problematic

Oh I really hope these drops work.....there is nothing like going away knowing an animal is poorly, its just awful.

He's fine, a little subdued, but the eye is barely opening.
Back at the be at 4.50, so we'll see what she says.
Fingers crossed it's good news. Bless him, he's still coming for cuddles and stuff, so obviously trusts us,which feels lovely given his former stray status.

Re: Bertie on house arrest u/d no surgery!
Just back from the vet. The eye is healing, albeit slowly.
The vet would be happier if it were healing faster, and in other cats may consider surgery more seriously. But it's obvious that interventions like this really distress him (he peed in the carrier today, he never does that) so the vet thinks we can keep taking care of this non-surgically.
We keep up with the ointment, poor lad. At least he likes his metacam - he can't tell it's mixed with his food

I'm glad he doesn't need surgery, and that you don't either after medicating him
You might find he likes the taste of Metacam anyway - we do.
More healing vibes
