Post by gemma997 Wed Nov 11, 2015 9:08 pm

Been to the vet with Miranda to get her weight checked as she was over weight last time.
Pellets get weighed to recommended dose, no treats and lots of exercise.
And she manages to gain weight No No No No No

Miranda's operation on monday is now cancelled until I can get her weight down, so poor Soundwave is now going it alone on monday Sad

Is she on pellets for weight-watchers? Does she go big on hay, if she loves her hay I'd maybe cut back a little more on pellets and see if she fills up on hay. That could help.
With Henry I'm always worried he's under weight. He was 3.55 when last weighed in Sept. and the vet said he was perfect, a lean, mean hopping machine (I love telling that!). But I still look at him and wonder .... he's such a big, lollopy buck and I worry!

Junior needs to join this class.

He also needs to get off his lazy butt!! I swear he eats less than Molly, she just burns it off because she never sits still!!!

I agree .... Miranda doesn't look overweight. She looks pretty much as any other doe of her breed/age.

Not that I am aware of how do you do that?

She does feel big when you lift her and she can't clean herself properly I do that for her twice a day.
She was very possive and greedy over food when we got her but now she in a routine we've made it into a game.

Cutting pellets back to 60g and she lots of hay anyways but I think it more the excercise side, she a slow bide her time kind of bun. If anyone has any ideas??? Bunny gym???

Looking at her feet she not an old bun and her feet are all stained looks as though she been outside and forgotten about.

But you can see her hind paws, her tummy doesn't hide them, and she doesn't appear to have a dewlap.
If she was left in a hutch all the time without exercise does she have any muscle wasting that would stop her cleaning herself properly?

There is an article in the current rabbiting on on diet.

60g seems a lot of pellets. I think my 2 get around 30g between them. I think of pellets as a supplement rather than a main food. And i scatter feed or put the pellets in a dog treat ball so they have to move when eating. I feed herbs and green leafy vegetables and try to steer clear of sugary root vegetables. Lots and lots of good quality hay. Also if she is overweight and not very active it might be worth talking to your vet about trying a small time limited dose if metacam as it could be pain or discomfort is preventing her from exercising. On the exercise front I would encourage periods of movement by gently moving her on from where she is sat for short periods of time. Or with old her pellets as movement treats. Call her and when she comes reward with a pellet. She will soon catch on and it will build your bond.

She does appear to try to clean just can't get around.
The 60g is recommend on the back packet and the nurse agreed with that.
The nurse checked her over and she happy that although she chubby she is perfectly fine.
Could her body be storing food in case of starvation, I never got a full break down of condition she was found in but the possession of food might suggest she had starved.

The packet recommendations are way too high. I always follow the rwaf feeding guidelines as they are specialist vet devised. All info is in hop to it - https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/pdfs/RWAbrochuremaster.pdf&ved=0CBsQFjAAahUKEwiv9s2G4YvJAhWDPxQKHSocA50&usg=AFQjCNHGxi92hIi6vhezmXDWRe1WD_MN2w&sig2=fSwZSwyi2o480O7Uj0yjeQ

Mine get an eggcup each, morning and afternoon. They would love more of course...lol.

I believe anyone seeing Annabelle would refer to her as "big boned". Its so hard getting her to lose weight because she just eats Charlies food!

I've never seen Miranda so excited than what she was this morning, was very active.
Soundwave decided he wanted to try soggy pellets.

Henry weighs 3.5 and has an eggcup of SS4+ in the morning and another in the evening. He gets a selection of greens and herbs mid afternoon and a few more when I go to bed. He's got a selection of six different hays available at all times and I still worry about him looking thin!

I've started splitting the food, they have been getting fed in morning and in the afternoon, also cut down to a small amount each time.
What a change, soundwave ate all his hay( which he never does) and Miranda has suddenly got a whole load of energy binkying and sprinting up/down the hallway.

Mind you didn't stop the pair of them diving into the bag of food lol
