Top tips far alfresco living
Hello
As we speak Mo is bonding with his new lady :luv:
When we move house they are going to live outside but I've not had outdoor buns since I was little. They will be in either a shed or a playhouse depending on space.
I am terrified about foxes-will a shed guard against them or are there modifications I would need to make.
I have seen some people insulated their sheds. Is this best? does it make a lot of difference?
I was planning on having a little hide box in whatever accomodation they have so that they have something to snuggle into. and will put lino down. Is there anything else thats vital to do?

Re: Top tips far alfresco living
hi - when will they be moving outside? just thinking if they are indoor buns now and they move out when it is cold they won't have grown a winter coat so you need to gradually get them used to the heat change.
i think re: foxes you need a good lock as they can open some locks - and make sure the windows are strong and not flimsy plastic that can just be popped in.
are you going to attach a run to the shed/playhouse?

Re: Top tips far alfresco living
Hello they'll be going out asap but depends on the weather. If it gets cold I'll delay it till next year.
Yes I'll be putting a run on to give them maximum room. The outside milarky is all new to me though

Re: Top tips far alfresco living
Putting small holed mesh over windows on the outside (leaving the glass in) can help make them more secure from people as well as predators. How were you planning acces to the run?
Re: Top tips far alfresco living
Thats strange I thought I'd replied to you Sooz. Thats a great idea abot the mesh. re access... a hatch of some sort that is lockable depending on the set up I guess. Any suggestions?

Re: Top tips far alfresco living
I think a lot of people use a cat flap, my friend has made her buns a tunnel from their shed to the run.
She also told me her female bun found a flaw in the wood (in the shed) and chewed a hole through it so maybe putting some mech over the inside to protect the wood would also be a good idea.....you could use it to attach the water bottles too as well of you use them.

I second catflaps. Mine are indoor bunnies with a permanent outdoor run that they can access through a catflap. I was amazed at how quickly they learnt - unless they had been taught in a previous life bunnies are more clever than I thought
Good luck with the setup

My very first rabbit used a cat flap. I'm starting to hope that the shed we inherit from the house will be suitable as housing is expencive isn't it!

Re: Top tips far alfresco living
Our buns have a cat flap. Took a while for Herbis to catch on tho
We have insulated our shed and then boarded it. If you have the money and time to do it, then I really recommend it. On the few hot days we had over the summer (!) the shed did not heat up too much at all. This is the stuff we used - pricey but did the job exactly. I know some people have used polystyrene sheets.
We are currently insulating and boarding out the big shed for BJ and Rosie but are using loft insulation as it is so much cheaper. We have used the other stuff on the roof though.
