Circular Rainbow Empty Circular Rainbow

Now I know they say that all rainbows are really a complete circle but we just can't see the whole ring as the earth gets in the way. But the other day I looked up at the sun and saw a complete rainbow around it. Red side closest to the sun, purple side farthest.

I tried to take a photo but was in a huge hurry and obviously couldn't stop it down enough to actually get a decent photo but here are a couple so you get the idea.

I have never seen anything like this before and was trying to work out why we would see this! I rang Mr B who was at work (a good 2 mins away) and he could see it, when I got where I was going (20 mins in almost the other direction) I could still see it. Bizarre.

me either. those photos are looking directly up at the sun by the way, and they aren't flare or anything like that, it was an actual rainbow!

Yup a complete circle. I know they say that all rainbows are a complete circle but we just can't see the bit that's below the horizon but I've never soon one with such a small diameter before...
