Dealing with that rabbit 'smell'. Empty Dealing with that rabbit 'smell'.

Post by Happy Hoppers Wed Dec 17, 2008 2:18 pm

Since it's been brought to my attention that the rabbit room is a bit, erm, stinky, I'm a little paranoid about the smell.

A lot of my wedding stuff is stored in the room including my dress in a breathable garment bag and I am worried that the scent will start to seep into the fabric. There isn't anywhere else safe to keep it due to the cats (they are not allowed in the rabbit room, we keep te door shut which probably dosn't help with the smell).

The buns are cleaned out every other day and use a litter tray which is done daily, they are bedded on towels and fleece which is changed weekly.

What else can I do?

Have you got something you can clean the carpets with? I've noticed my carpet seems to attract and hold smell scratch

I'd suggest air it as often as possible (either by the door or window if temperature permits). We usea lot of air fresheners but we have a sizeable room which is a sort of offshoot to the living room so they are not cooped up with the smell - I don't know how big your bunny room is.

Failing that I'd use one of those "Odour neturalising" sprays. We use those as well but, as I say, we have a fairly large room so the 'fumes' dissipate well.

Other than that I'm out pal I'm afraid!Hmmm

Maybe you need to move your wedding dress so that you don't worry about it. No matter how much you clean the room, you'll will be paranoid about the dress smelling so you're better to move it and take that worry away.

I have the same problem with bunny smell. Mindy lives in the dining room which has carpet. I bought a couple of cheap shower curtains (material not UPVC? ones) to cover the carpet. I use baby wipes or anti-bacterial wipes to clean up any mess and wash the curtains when they get a bit smelly. They dry pretty quickly too. Unfortunately, she does manage to scoop up the curtain and the carpet gets weed on, so It has to be shampooed about twice a week. The worst smell seems to come from weed on hay, I have found that she eats more hay if it is in the litter tray!!!!! So that has to be removed frequently. Mindy is getting better at using the litter tray and I hope that now she is spayed, she will be even better. We are always spraying air freshener around the house and use oil burners.
The long term plan though, is to get vinyl floor covering, but wont be able to afford it until the New Year.

I keep Bertie's room really clean, dust every day, but I don't have a carpet in there, and I guess that holds odour. I do have (which works brilliantly) a 'Neutradol' Gel thing in the room.Dealing with that rabbit 'smell'. Continous_range

It doesn't smell, it just stops smells. My wardrobe is in Berties room and I can smell that bunny smell on my clothes sometimes, so maybe moving your dress would be a good idea Smile

Your conservatory has so many uses Laughing

I have a plan of action:
1. Post engineer invasion and floor lifting I am going to steam clean the carpet
2. I am going to purchase much bicarbonate of soda and apply to the floor once a week as an odourless 'shake and vac'
3. I'm going to get some of those neutradol gel things

If all else fails I am buying visitors face masks Thumbs Up

I have discovered that using newspaper to line the litter tray with and then shredded paper on top helps with the wee smell a bit. You could also try using a paper or wood based cat litter in the trays - might make a mess though if they kick it out. Have you got a window you can open ? Maybe you could wash the material bedding 2-3 times a week ? I have old carpet lining my crates and hutch and throw them away when they get too manky.

I already switched to wood based litter, we ran out of shreddings and the tray was getting saturated quickly with those.

I'm just paranoid now, yesterday the engineers said the carpet smelt of wee when they lifted it.

My mum has mentioned that our pet room smells but I honestly don't notice it and wonder if she's just fibbing as she thinks rabbits should live outside (yawn). Then again, my nose has probably become immune to it! The piggies bedding gets changed every couple of days and the rabbit litter trays are changed every day so there ought not to be any smell.

If all else fails I am buying visitors face masks
I'm sure it's not that bad! Laughing

have you thought about getting an extract fan put in to keep the air moving-something like a bathroom fan and if it has a vent panel in it can keep drafts out but pull a cord or put the light on and it runs....

There's an air brick type vent in the wall, hence why the room was so cold without heating. Wave
