My Poor Sarah-Rabbit - U/D 30th July
Sarah has a terminal Respiratory Tract condition. She has been kept comfortable on a variety on meds since March. We really did not believe she would cope for this long. However, this heat has really taken its toll on her and for the first time in her illness she is mouth breathing Not all the time, just when lying down ie when her chest cavity is restricted. She is still eating well and does not appear to be at all distressed. But I know what mouth-breathing in a Bun means...........
This afternoon Christabel, our Vet, has advised I give her an extra dose of diuretic to try to shift any fluid from her lungs. I am also to give her a strong sedative if she becomes distressed. Should sedation be needed Sarah will then be taken to Christabel to be helped to The Bridge

I hope the Lady isn't too uncomfortable, and that it all goes well for her, thinking of you both x
Re: My Poor Sarah-Rabbit - U/D 30th July
Sarah is more comfortable now. The extra dose of diuretic has certainly shifted some fluid. She has also realised that if she lies on her side not so much pressure goes onto her chest and she does not need to mouth breathe.
It is so hard to see her obviously poorly in some ways, yet she is still eating like a horse and very, very bright. At least I know our Vet will most definately tell me if she thinks I must let Sarah go.

Re: My Poor Sarah-Rabbit - U/D 30th July
Thanks everyone
Sarah is coping better this morning as its not too hot yet. I have not needed to sedate her as she has not been at all distressed overnight.
I will speak with Christabel later about what dose of diuretic to keep Sarah on now. She also remains on a long-acting steroid injection every 7 days and a Depocillin injection every 3 days.
Sarah's behaviour is not that of such a sick Bunny. She remains bright and as greedy as ever. But she is so skinny now and with yesterday's episode of mouth breathing I know her time is running out

Re: My Poor Sarah-Rabbit - U/D 30th July
This is such a difficult call to judge. Sarah is still eating well and is very bright.
Her respiration is still very laboured but she is not mouth breathing now. Her colour is better too. Last night her lips and gums were purple
This isnt a recovery, Sarah cant get better But with her still being so bright within herself 'the decision' is such a hard one for me to make.
I will speak with Christabel ( Vet) this morning and seek her opinion.
I dont know what to do

Re: My Poor Sarah-Rabbit - U/D 30th July
Sarah is still with us
Christabel has said that even though she is terminally ill she is not suffering. Her mouth breathing episodes are relatively short and dont appear to cause Sarah undue distress. She will be laying down mouth breathing then get up and hop over to have something to eat. The mouth breathing only happens when she is laying on her front. If she is sitting or standing up or laying on her side she does not need to mouth breathe.
I said to Christabel that I was worried I was being unkind in keeping Sarah going with all the meds. But Christabel said if she thought I was she'd tell me and that Sarah clearly was not ready to go just yet.
We can contact Christabel at any time should things deteriorate
