A hutch alone really isn't enough
We're very lucky in this country to have so few predators and such a temperate climate. For most of us, it makes it possible to allow our rabbits safe, supervised access to the outdoors for play and exercise, whereas people in other countries have to think of the dangers from vultures, cougars, bears....etc, etc, etc.
So, very many of our rabbits do live very happy lives either as houserabbits with access to the outdoors, or as well care-for outdoor rabbits who have plenty of space, good, strong, safe, robust and spacious housing, plenty of exercise space, protection from the elements and from those predators we do have, and lots of their owners' time.
But there are still those unfortunate rabbits who have a small, cramped hutch, often not properly protected from hot summer sun or the deep penetrating winter chill, perhaps not fully waterproofed, who never get out from one week's end to the next and have only the very least amount of care and handling from owners.
Often this is not deliberate cruelty, but simply ignorance of a rabbit's true needs. People who think this sort of life is okay for these very intelligent, responsive and wonderful animals need to be educated and encouraged to improve their rabbits' lives. Hutch manufacturers and retailers need to sell only products that are of good enough size and quality.
This is the basis of the RWAF campaign, A Hutch is Not Enough. Details can be found here http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/ahutchisnotenough.htm
Please search your own heart.....is what you give your bunny the very best you can manage? Is there any way you can help others? Can you support RWAF's campaign?
