More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Off to the vet tomorrow to get Felix checked over, but the abscess appears to have disappeared and he is eating and drinking just fine.
However ........ I noticed yesterday that Wolfie appears to have a lump on his face now! Honestly, my vet must think I fancy him!! And if it is an abscess, I am NOT looking forward to having to inject the Wolfster. I took him in yesterday in a towel and it was like holding a cactus. All his claws were sticking through the towel and he was just poised to go off on one and that was just for a syringe of Baytril!
Please send some vibes that his lump will be nothing serious and that my buns have a period of good health.

Sorry I didn't reply at work today Katie, but we are moving offices tomorrow so I was really busy.
Going to the vets at 6.40 tonight, so have just put the boys into the hutch and will get them in the carrier after tea.
Will post later but have TKD straight after vets.

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Back home and it's not good news. Wolfie does indeed have an abscess but it isn't in the soft tissue like Felix's, his is in the bone of his jaw. The vet thinks it is probably come through a back molar and gone in along the root.
I am taking him back tomorrow for an exploratory examination under GA because he was very uncooperative - he scratched the vet badly. They will have a good look and take x-rays. If they feel they can save him they will, but if they think it is a hopeless case, I have asked them to PTS. I don't want Wolfie suffering like Gloria did. I absolutely hated seeing her fade away and feel I owe it to him to let him go with dignity if that is what the ultimate outcome will be.
Feeling very raw just now.
Happily, Felix's abscess has completely disappeared.

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
I have had a good cry now and decided that I need to take positive action. I have come across this site which suggests that abscesses respond well to penicillin (bacillin) and am going to ask my vet if we can at least attempt this course first. I just can't bear the thought of losing him like this without a bloody good try at saving him, but without his being ill.

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Just done more checking and I can't use the penicillin. Bicillin isn't licensed for use in the UK.
http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/resources/content/info-sheets/penicillin.htm
I will ask the vet for the closest alternative.

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Thanks Katie. He has an abscess in the bone of his jaw. Had a big glass of Baileys and a good cry. Dreading tomorrow. I have to leave him at the vets in the morning having signed a PTS form in case they can't do anything. Will be waiting for a phone call and just don't know how I will cope.
I found this site that suggested that a penicillin injection called Bicillan could help, but it isn't licensed in the UK so I can't use it here. I am going to ask the vet if they could use the closest alternative. It's clutching at straws but I have to ask.

What has Mr C done for Daisy?
Tomorrow they are going to investigate under GA and take X-rays.

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Im not really sure - from our point of view we give him strong pain killers and anti-b's and Mr Chitty takes him in and xrays him etc every few weeks.
We are playing a long game here though - it took nearly a year last time, and we are on that kind of road again I think. Mr C said its about managing his pain and letting the anti-b's do their work over time.
I know that he does advise vets, so might be worth suggesting your vets give him a call. Im sure he would be happy to help and if nothing else is worth a try. They might be able to mail his xrays or something (im just thinking out loud here) but its all worth a go eh?

Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Hey Nickie - I am so sorry to read this. I have found buns respond well to depocillen injections which my vet sends m home with abd allows me to administer which reduces the stress of vet trips every few days. Hopefully these could help Wolfie. Abscesses fill me with dread and I am sending lots of vibes that Wolfie can get better soon x
Re: More abscesses! U/d Bad News
Thanks Charlotte. Going to suggest using Deplocillan to see if we can help him. Fingers crossed.
