Sandy not well u/d dead
Never rains but it pours ey. Now Sandy who has always been a healthy bun seems to be under the weather. I went out last night to give the buns their bed time snack and he wasn't interested. Never a good sign. I gave him all the checks, No dribble, Soft tummy, No cuts or wounds, limbs all ok. So I put his water bowl in front of him and he drank. I tried syringe feeding some baby food but he did not enjoy that. I gave him fibreplex and metacam as well as some bio lapis but this morning he seems much the same. Off to the vets we go.

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Yup teeth Reen. Having GA now. Worried after last week. But I know that it is statistically low. Apparently this vet was saying that Ruby's death has been a real shock at practice
Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Fingers crossed everything goes well. I know how worried you will be.

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
I can't believe I am saying this, Sandy died under GA.
They phoned and had got into the dental and discovered a small, abscess starting to form where a little spike was, all of a sudden he arrested and they tried to resuss but could not bring him back. To say I am gutted is an understatement. Sandy was a such a gentle bun and he and lily had been married for years. I am so worried about how she is going to cope.
I was with Dawn, Corrina, and Jo and Ryan, Ruby's mum and dad at the time, so you can inagine how distressing it has been.
The vets said that this would need to be investigated and I agreed. Yodaphine and I went up to the vets to see them and the vet had had a look at the batches. Ruby's batch had been used up until Saturday and although ruby passed with it's use, all other rabbits had survived. Sandy's batch was an entirely different one that was opened today and another rabbit had a successful operation with it's use today. Therefore the conclusion is that the batches cannot be to blame. I am so worried as we have lots of RSPCA bunnies who will need to go in for routine ops.
I have asked them to d a post morgen on Sandy to see what we can find out. I have also just had a long chat with Sooz about all this who feels that it is likely this could be a case of lightening striking twice. My vets have had an excellent success rates with buns and anaesthetics and perhaps their luck has run out. Sooz also states that I need to find out if the batches of anaesthetic were consecutive.
I am just devastated. I cannot believe what has happened. Sandy really is the nicest of bunnies. He is a warm, gentle bun. Even my hubby who isn't into the rabbits said he couldn't believe it and that Sandy was such a nice fella. He is gutted too. sandy and lily are outside my back door and I can't believe his little brown face isn't going to be begging for yummies. I just don't know what to say or think. I can't believe this.

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Post mortem results show mutliple small hemorrages in one lung which are not seen in port mortem usually.
She checked the batches and they are actually entirely different brands.

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
I'm so sorry Charlotte, what an awful week. Are the hemorrages as a result of the GA or could they have been there before?

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
She says they will have been there before for sure. There was also a small necrotic patch on his liver but she felt that this would not have contributed to him passing under aneasthetic. I am just hollow.

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Ive just seen this on facebook Charlotte, I am so sorry I just can't believe it, Sandy was one of those buns who just...seemed to always keep going, never poorly, always happy, its just such a shock.
I know how heartbroken you are right now, and i know its not a consolation but... he had a very happy life, he wasnt poorly, he didnt suffer or have ups and downs, he had a great life with Lily. I just wish it was longer.
I hope you are okay hun xx

It has truly been a sad few weeks. Made me realise how fragile they are and how quickly these things happen. Gave all mine a cuddle this evening, although they werent happy about it! You know they're so precious but its times like this that hits it home.
Im so sorry to everyone who has lost a special bun recently x

Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Very fragile and I just feel like I can't keep going through this. With Chance I had some peace as he was so old and just went naturally. Even though Sandy was older, it still sucks and the fact that no one can tell me why there were these mini haemorrhages in his one lung makes me wonder what ESA wrong. There is no doubt that the reason he was ill was due to his teeth and the abscess the spikes had caused. And I guess if I had not gone through with a pm then we wouldn't know about the lung, but know that I do know I want to know more. She said that other than than these factors all his other organs looked perfectly healthy and there were no other problems present?
Re: Sandy not well u/d dead
Its hard, I think to some extent we always think we would know why our rabbits died because we all pride ourselves on teaching and educating everybody else, so when we dont know the answers on our own bunnies it breaks our hearts, and it just doesn't seem fair...its not fair.
you've lost two special buns so close together, no wonder your feeling like this. x
