Giant Owners
How do you do it?
Have them knowing that they will only be with you a short time?
I loved every muinute I had lily from the 10 weeks old adoption board to the day she left me at 4.5 years.
Ive been thinking that perhaps I should open my life to another giant but.
I find it very hard to think of taking on a giant that’s anything over 6 months as I know you don’t get long with them.
Is this mean or natural? Ive found a lovely blue conti BUT he's a just over a year old.
He's a house bun already and seems really cheeky
Ive also found a 5month old steel giant that I don’t believe is currently a house bun.
Maybe I should just keep wiaitng and the right bunny will come along

Re: Giant Owners
I think theres no guarantee with any bunny as you know, and okay they will have a shorter lifespan but then so many other breeds are restricted with their health issues too, I dont think theres a right or wrong answer on what to.
I think just go with what makes you happy, you didnt love Lily because she was a giant, you loved her because she was Lily...and any other rabbit would be the same, you would love them regardless of size, colour, age etc.
so maybe see what else is out there rather than restrict yourself, but if it is a giant that you want then that is okay too.
if that made any sense! x

Re: Giant Owners
Like Sarah Jane said there is no guarantee with any bunny we lost Cloud my gorgeous little lop at 7 month's old (that's her as my avatar photo)
I would say go with your heart and if you get another Conti just enjoy the time you have and don't think about 'how long'. We have blind and disabled Baby Saint (below in signature) on limited time but we just don't think about it.
Whatever you decide Good Luck xxxxxxxxxx

Re: Giant Owners
In a way its similar to the decision I will make when I adopt another dog, do I go for a Cavalier that like Bonnie or something different, she lives a long time but thats rare for those breeds, and I cant decide yet.
But whatever dog I end up with I will love and its the same for you which rabbit you choose, we never know how long our pets will be around, we just have to treasure every day. x

Re: Giant Owners
I found Milo and he's gorgeous a real cheeky character but im so scared of getting him and then losing him.
My nethie boy despite his health issues is 8, Lily was only 4.5 when I lost her. Myabe im too raw still I dont know.
I think its harder as im looking for an indoor bunny too and they are hard to find in rescues.

Re: Giant Owners
I lost my Cosie after just a year, almost to the day and I was devastated. There are many friends on here who don't have bunnies for that long even and my heart goes out to them too.

Re: Giant Owners
Now you see, I read this thread and had imagined it to be about anyone over 6ft!

Re: Giant Owners
I can completely understand how you are feeling having lost your little angel.
But we would never swap the joy of having a bun to love, even if it does mean enduring the pain of loss. All we can do is give these angels with fluffy tails a wonderful life and let then enrich ours, in a way only they can, however short or long that time may be.

Re: Giant Owners
Katie thanks Im pro rescue but its hard to find rescue giants that are young.
Ive found a lovely blue conti but he's a year old and I cant help but think im setting myself up for heartache in such a short time.
I wish I could find a baby conti from a rescue ive found one thats 5 months but havent heard back yet and he's an outdoor bun I believe

Re: Giant Owners
Rory was outdoors untill i got him at 4 mnths, the transition has been fine. Also the advantage of having a slightly older bun, is that they would have been neutured or spayed, and had their jabs, this will not only be kinder on ur pocket, but u dont have to worry about loosing them under the G.A. Also i dont think u can get a really good idea on a buns personality when they are babies, where as an older bun is easier to read. Willow was very placid as a baby, now she is a tyrant! Only i could love the little minx, if she was up for adoption in a rescue, no one would want her! My advice to u would be to go and see any buns ur interested in, the more the better, and when u cant walk away from one then thats the one for u. When i was passed stinky knotty rory and he buried himself in my arm pit, and tried to play dead, it was instant, that overwhelming protective instinct where my hackles went up and if the breeder had tried to touch him again i would of grown horns! Re: Giant Owners
I agree with Katie, we know we are going to grieve when they die, but we couldn't be without them.

Re: Giant Owners
Just think about how you could give one a few amazing years not how many years you wont have.
Re: Giant Owners
It is hard, I can't stand thinking about the fact that by the end of this year Bella will be roughly 3 yrs old. But I don't think about it too much I have learnt that any bunny is a 'walking angel' and can be gone at any time.
Re: Giant Owners
I contacted the guy again about Milo and have been looking up insurance quotes etc...
I chased up the lady about Duncan but avent heard back yet.
I then searched preloved again and found a breeder they are adorable and you get them at 8 weeks old with a full update on them as they grow.
My head says to go for Duncan, my irrational head says get two from a breeder maximising the time I have with them and its not like there are many giants in rescue.
My heart I think says get Milo or two babies
