Panacur
I had a nine-day course of Panacur as one of the meds to sort my tummy out (also a few days on Metaclopramide), and I now have Pro-C in my water all the time.
My tummy has been a bit upset again just recently, although I am on antibiotics. My Humum wants to have a backup plan in case it's not just that which is causing it.
We're heard that Panacur is sometimes prescribed for longer than nine days - does anyone have personal experience of giving a longer course?
Do the hoppers use Panacur regularly as a matter of course, as well as a treatment when it's needed?

Re: Panacur
Sorry Sparky, I'm no help to you really.
All I can tell you is that thumper has gone nearly 11 years without being on it once.
Can't be more help than that I'm afraid

Re: Panacur
I have used it for 28 days before when the buns were a bit under the weather and next door had just lost a bun very quickly. I believe 28 days is standard for treating E.C. and that 9 is just for preventative. Although I have also heard that 9 days is not long enough to treat anything. There was definitely something about it in Jays conference notes. I don't really believe in preventative medicine other than vaccination as you tend to end up with med resistant viruses, bacteria and protozoa.

When we use Panacur we have the buns on it for 28 days as well.

Re: Panacur
Thanks for the info peeps, it all helps in deciding a plan of action
Humum feels the same, except in the case of our strain of Pasteurella which needs everything throwing at it fast and hard just to knock it back.cheryl'n'bruce'flo wrote:I don't really believe in preventative medicine other than vaccination as you tend to end up with med resistant viruses, bacteria and protozoa.
What triggers you to putting a bun on it?Tuckerbunnies wrote:When we use Panacur we have the buns on it for 28 days as well.

With pasturella you are treating something though. However Panacur being a anti parasitic is not treating pasturella as that is a bacterial infection. That is not to say that you don't have e.c as well .
If you are treating everyone it is probably worth giving the Panacur liquid 10% which my vet advised me to give 0.1ml per 500g body weight. It is a more accurate way of dosing as well

Have you got 'When your rabbit needs special care'? It is a really useful book that covers all different ways of treating buns and has a quick reference meds guide in the back. They stress the need to treat with antibiotics for 21days when pasturella is diagnosed and fenbendazole for 4 weeks for EC. If you are on anti-bs for a long time like this you may well want to boost your Pro-bs from the pro-c you are currently getting (which you can take indefinitely) to Bio-Lapis or avipro-plus which are designed for rabbits who are ill.

Re: Panacur
Is the 28-day course a preventative for EC as opposed to normal tummy 'worms'? I have no reason to suspect EC, it's my tummy which is delicate. Hopefully it is just due to the antibiotics...cheryl'n'bruce'flo wrote:That is not to say that you don't have e.c as well .
We do have that book - it's proved very usefulcheryl'n'bruce'flo wrote: Have you got 'When your rabbit needs special care'? We'd tried long-term oral anti-biotics before and they seemed to make no difference whatsoever. Taffy and I have had Alamycin injections - three of them, each three days apart, so effectively nine or ten days of antibiotic treatment. This is the one drug which seemed to make a difference to Molly, although it seems she was too poorly for too long to pull through We have had the treatment at the first sign of snuffles. Do you think we should be on the abx for longer?

Re: Panacur
I would go for the 21 days to give the best chance based on what I have read. However, if your hoomins are RWAF members I would be asking the vet to refer to Richard Saunders if they are not they could ask the vet to speak to one of the expert vets such as FHB or Jay's friend John Chitty.

Thanks - yes we're RWAF members so will give the vet a ring tomorrow and ask her to contact Richard Saunders

If we get a new rescue bunny in we always put them on Panacur for 28 days as a precaution against e.cuniculi, if we think they have e.cuniculi we obviously put them on a course of Panacur for 28 days and will do it three times a year, we also put them on Panacur sometimes if they have a bad ear infection.

FHB would definitely recommend Panacur at 28 days for active EC only, and 9 days as preventative. One of my bunnies (Artie) tested positive for EC 3 months ago and he was given 28 days Panacur after having his kidney removed, all my other bunnies were recommended to have 9 days only, even Artie's companion, as the side-effects of Panacur were considered more of a risk than any unconfirmed EC. FHB has also said that it's difficult to know what to advise as the recommendations are so vague.
