Is this true about grass?
I had to go and get Her Majesty of Lower Earley some more hay today, and also got her some readi-grass. When it rains my back garden turns into a bog, so there's no chance of getting her any grass from there any time soon. The lady in the shop commented on it, saying that its really good at this time of year, as in the winter grass has no nutrional value.
Is that true? I've never heard it before and trying to work out how it could even be possible to have different nutional values at different times of year! I could understand in the summer when its brown, but its still green in the winter - just soggy in my garden!
Any thoughts/opinions?

Re: Is this true about grass?
It's true.... I'm a country/farm girl (well I was a girl ONCE).
Grass stops growing in winter. Wild rabbits will dig to the roots but domestic buns don't need to they have servants to seek out nourishing alternatives.
You should also be careful about feeding the first spring grass, it can bloat a bun the same as sheep and cattle.

Re: Is this true about grass?
Well grass doesn't really grow in winter, so I guess it doesn't produce much nutrients during this period as it is just trying to not due in the cold! Also does it have anything to do with less daylight? With less daylight it surely doesn't absorb/ produce much goodness!
I actually have no idea! That is just my guess!! Feel free someone to say something factual!!

I agree about the whole grass not growing in winter thing. I was going to say the same before I saw Dee's post

This is fascinating, I had absolutely no idea. Mine just get hay, we don't have any grass in our backyard (just yummy plants for Bruce to kill).
So very true!

Re: Is this true about grass?
Yup. It's true. One of my grandfathers was a farmer/rancher. We'd have to check the fence every morning in early spring so the cows couldn't get to the nice tender shoots of wheat or oats.
One crop he planted was what we here in the USA is call 'Winter wheat'. It stays green all winter although it remains closer to the ground until the days get longer and it starts to get warmer. He said that if the cows got to it they would bloat could die. I guess the wild rabbits and hares knew better than to eat it.

A rancher sounds so much more exciting than being a farmer.
We plant winter wheat in the UK too. In my area it is mostly barley they plant for cattle feed and whisky.
