teeth removal question
A friend of mine who got the 2 girls who was preg, took one of the babies to the vets as she was watching him drink and thought there was something stuck in his mouth but when she looked it was a tooth top and bottom had curled into the gum, she took him to the vets and I said they should just be able to clip them, and they have but they want him back in 6 weeks as they may have to remover them. The vet said they only use the back teeth.
Michelle gives them loads of hay pellets veg etc.
I found it abit unusual as he is only about 5 months old, I have his sister and mother as they are unable to be handled so they have joined my girls, there teeth are fine as I checked them when they arrived and when michelle text me about her buns teeth.
What do you recon about the vets advice??? I find it abit drastic x

Re: teeth removal question
I think the vet is probably right to remove them as it sounds like it may be a genetic problem. Just because none of the other kits have shown signs of dental problems, they may or may not show them later in life. It is possible for just one bun from the litter to have problems.
As you said, he is only young and for a bun to have such bad malocclusion at that age would suggest to me that it will be an ongoing thing. It is probably the kindest thing to do, as it would require ongoing treatment which is stressful for the bun and if it doesnt get treated when necessary, they can eventually kill the rabbit.
Many buns manage fine without their front teeth. Emma on here has a bun called Mischeif who has had front teeth removed. I dont know if its one or both but you could PM her.
Im no expert though, im sure someone with more experienced will be along soon

Re: teeth removal question
Keegan one of our Bridge bunnies was only a youngster when he had to have his front teeth removed. He had been neutered and we went back for a check up and I don't know how he managed it but he got his front incisor teeth stuck in the wire pet carrier at the time and by the time we got to the vet's he had pulled them both out and they never grew back correctly and that was the start of his malocclusion which led to him having to have them eventually removed.
