Hello I'm Helen from the UK
Hello,
My name is Helen and last week I bought a 9 week old male rabbit whom I have named Ralph. He is a little shy but I am hoping he will venture out of his cage very soon so we can start bonding with each other.....
Below is a picture of him, I think he is a lop, maybe harlequin, but not exactly sure. Have you any idea what he is?
Any tips on how to bond with Ralph are greatly appreciated. I am wondering should I put my hand in his cage and try to pet him, or should I wait until he eventually ventures out of the cage. I do sit with him beside his cage for periods throughout the day when he is out of his blue igloo and have opened the cage door, but so far have resisted the temptation to stroke/touch him as I don't want to frighten him. Any thoughts?
Best Wishes,
Helen

Hi Helen and welcome to HH
Ralph is beautiful :luv: He looks like a Harlequin Lop to me. Personally I'd let him come to you, his cage is his refuge, and if you put your in hand in it may upset him, although he looks like a lovely mellow fella!

Hi Helen and Ralph
Welcome to Happy Hoppers. I would definately start trying to handle Ralph now. Not by picking him up at first but by stroking the 'bridge' of his nose as you talk quietly to him.
Rabbits have poor vision of objects closeby and head on because of how their eyes are positioned. So you need to make Ralph aware of your presence before touching him. Once he is happy with noserubs and taking food from your hand then make sure you pick him up a few times a day. Rabbits often dislike being picked up, but regular handling from a young age can help make it a bit easier to carry out health checks and grooming as Ralph grows up.
He will need two vaccinations to protect him from nasty Rabbit Diseases, Myxomatosis and VHD. He is old enough to have them now and I'd advise you to get the Myxomatosis Vaccination done first and then two weeks later the VHD Vaccination.
Once Ralph reaches puberty he will exhibit 'hormonal' behaviour including spraying wee over things he finds attractive !! Having him neutered will stop the hormonal behaviour and will make for a much happier Bunny.

Hi Helen, welcome to HH.
Ralph is gorgeous :luv: and I agree with what Jane said about gently introducing yourself to him. The more he is handled as a youngster, the happier he will be with it in future.
Hope you enjoy it here
