Wee bit worried about Summer
My wee blind, slightly brain damaged girl . She isn't "unwell" as such, as in she is eating and is happy, but she is slowing down quickly, the past couple of days (i probably first noticed on Saturday) she has been a bit reluctant to do much. On Satuday i put it down to an "off day". I did wonder when Maysie was here why she didnt come out of her hay basket, but i figured the new smells confused her, and she was just happy to be fussed where she was, she loved the fuss Maysie made of her. But last night she didnt come out of her basket for her supper, so i put some food in the basket with her. Today i physically took her out of the basket and she raced over for a drink . I have not had a great day myself with lots of appointments and stuff, so i probably havent been as aware of the bunnies as i should have been, im wondering now if i should have seen the vet, but there is nothing really "wrong" just her ailments getting the better of her a bit i think .
To let you understand, she must be about 8 now, lost an eye to EC and is blind in the other one. I am 90% convinced she has brain damage and she has very short "froggy" hind legs. They are not splayed but they are not right either . She is bright and happy and eating, but i think the next step is to remove the hay basket so she does not have obticles to battle with. She previously coped with them, but not now.

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
Oh no Sharon I hope she is ok do you think she is drinking enough water as I am wondering if she is just sitting there and not taking enough water. We buy potting trays from garden centres and our buns love them and they are ideal for disabled bunnies and are sometimes cheaper than a real litter tray, they take up a lot of room but two bunnies or three can sit together quite happily in them.
We got ours off ebay as our local garden centre had sold out. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stewarts-Handy-Potting-Tray-Dark-Green-/380393823896?pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenEquipment_HandTools_SM&hash=item58913d1e98
I do hope she will be ok sending lots of Vibes for her xxxxx
This is Helen and Baby Saint in their potting tray
Excuse the wee stains and poop they are both incontinent and I have to wash all the vet bed and mats every other day.

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
Those trays look ideal Maysie, i will order up one (or two as Riley is sore and arthritic these days too). I am not sure, to be honest, Willow had also kicked her woodchips into the water bowl when i wasnt about, so Summer may have been out for a drink but couldnt get one i hope this is the case and i am just overreacting about her not leaving the basket. I think i will put a water bottle in too, just because Willow can be so athletic, the woodchips go everywhere.
I honestly dont think Summer is sore or poorly, just feeling her age and ailments . But then we all have off days dont we, hopefully she will perk up again.

I am a great believer in plenty of water for bunnies and so many times when they are not so good it's just lack of water, I wondered if she had a touch of arthritis and that's why she is reluctant to move far.
Yes we all have off days even bunnies

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
Our bunny, Lady, became blind in her senior years. She had adjusted so well we didn't even notice! She navigated by smell. Did her bunny 500's and everything.....unless someone moved furniture, her litter box or her cage that she rarely used. Did something happen where her scent was not there to guide her?
Those garden trays Maysie showed looked perfect for your bunns. It will no doubt be more comfortable for her.

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
My Thumper lived until the grand old age of nearly 11. She had good days where she'd be like a young bunny again and bad days where she'd happily just laze around, stare into space and just want cuddles!
I hope Summer is having a better day today.

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
Mega vibe top up for Summer. I have a soft spot for special
needs lops. Thumper is our first 'normal' bunns. She is beautiful!
I would be tempted to carry her around a lot sort of on my
shoulder tucked into my shirt like Lady liked to do.

Re: Wee bit worried about Summer
Thank you for all the thought for wee Summer . Sorry i have been AWOL i had to work loads , then my internet got cut off because my car insurance took 3 payments, making my virgin media DD bounce . But im back, and im on holiday this week so i will be about .
Summer is feeling much better, more lively and interested. However, i think the issue is she simply forgets she needs to drink. Whether her brain damage is getting worse or she has some sort of dementia, im not sure. Maysie suggested i syringe water her, which i am doing, and i am putting her next to her bowl to remind her . She takes big drinks when i do that. Last night she forgot to get her supper, she just sat content until i lifted her next to the food and she started eating. Bless her she is such a special wee thing .
