Charlies not looking brilliant :(
My old boy has started deteriorating again.
As you may of known he went very very skinny and lost most of his hair over winter.
With a lot of TLC he had put weight on and most of his hair had grown back and was looking brighter. However over the last couple of weeks he's looking very skinny and bored again.
He's never been one to run off or struggle anyway, but he is getting slower.
I even had to give him a bath today because he's not been cleaning his 'bits' so his bum was stained and he had a mat in his tail
Hes flyguarded regularly because I know he isn't very good at keeping himself clean, but he's been really awful recently.
He's going to the vets tomorrow with Opal, for vaccinations and hopefully an insight as to why he's gone downhill again.
Im sort of preparing myself for the worst, but I want the best for him so if that means letting him go peacefully then thats what I will do.
Don't really know why Iv wrote this...I think I just needed to get my feelings out there..sorry for waffling

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
Fingers crossed for vets today.
I hope there is something that can be done to give him a spring in his step again or at least to help him cope.

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
UPDATE-
Just got back from vets and he's not looking very good.
His bad eye has got worse and needs to be removed.
They gave him a blood test to check his kidneys, luckily the results came back fine.
He has an absess in his throat.
He has semi paralasis [sp?] in his back legs.
The vet nurse, lovely lady, said everything points to EC that hasn't been treated properly, which I feel awful about because my previous vet said many times that its just 'one of those things' and he was just a sickly bun. Even after a number of times taking him back because I wasn't happy with the diagnosis.
Anyway. I have to decide, wether to take him back friday for him to be knocked out for his eye to be removed and for X-rays on his spine and absess removals and check his jaw etc.....or just to call it a day and let him go peacefully with no more pain and suffering.
Its such a difficult thing to think about doing because somedays he seems much brighter......what to do?!

Bless your heart Kate! What a difficult decision you have and only you can make it. Poor baby sounds like he is awfully ill. The surgery itself might be too much for the little guy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your bun, I'm sure whatever decision you make for him will be for the best - you know your bun the most and only you can decide. Thinking of you both at such a difficult time. xx

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this about Charlie
I think at the end of the day it comes down to quality of life and only you can make that decision as nobody know's your bunny like you do but it's an awful decision to make and I know how difficult it is.
My heart goes out to you

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
It does all come down to quality of life. I think it would be an awful lot of surgery to put him through, and the throat abscess sounds like it might be particularly difficult to recuperate from - how does a bun eat when he has had surgery on his throat?
If you know that he is on limited time, you can spoil him rotten and make the most of the time he does have. You'll know when he is ready to go

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
I'm really sorry
How old is he? His age will of course count in how well he would get through the operation.
It's a decision only you can make and I cannot imagine how hard it is.

I'm really so sorry to hear about poor Charlie, bless him. It's a horrible decision for you to make but I am sure you will know in your heart what the right decision is for him.

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
Iv spoke to the vet nurse and we both agree that the chances of him recovering from the operation and having a good quality of life afterwards is very slim
The fact he has so many things wrong and he is about half the weight he should be doesn't help. If it was just one problem and he was otherwise healthy then he would have the treatment no questions...but thats just not the case
He would have such a difficult time recovering from his jaw bone being cut into, and his throat abscess let alone his eye being removed, and the paralysis getting worse.
No. Its not worth putting him through, poor boy.
Im taking him to the vet for his last trip on friday

I was going to ask whether his quality of life has already deteriorated to that extent, or whether you might get a bit longer without making him suffer, but if his weight is that low you would probably be putting it off for the wrong reasons.
I know what a difficult decision it is, and knowing that you are doing them the 'final kindness' really does not help very much at all. We'll be thinking of you

Re: Charlies not looking brilliant :(
Thanks everyone...
He's really making this difficult..hes been hopping about, grooming Opal & himself, eating loads of veggies and I saw him do a happy flop in the sun.
Don't know if I'm doing the right thing???
Iv even emailed the vet nurse again tonight and told her, and asked what his outcome might be if we went ahead with the operation.
Its so hard
