 Choking Empty Choking

Has one of your buns ever choked on their food?

Tigger just scared the life out of me...

She was stuffing her pellets, then all of a sudden she stops chewing and freezes, one of her ears goes right down and she starts moving in a hunched up position. Next I see her lean over to her bowl and half a wet pellet falls out of her mouth. Then she sits hunched up again and drags herself to turn around and face her back to me, I saw her eyes go really wide. I gave her a little gentle pat on the back (I didn't know what to do!! pale) and then she swallowed, her eyes went back to normal and she went back to eating. pale Shocked

Has anyone else had this? Talk about heart attack.

Tigger! You have put your Mum through quite enough just lately, young lady! Now stop inhaling your food and eat nicely like a civilised bun Evil or Very Mad

We've not experienced it but have heard of it - I can imagine it's terrifying. Apparently there is a version of the heimlich maneuvre which can be tried in a life-or-death situation but that sounds equally terrifying as it would be so easy to do the bun harm trying to save it.

What pellets do you feed? Humum approves of the SS because they don't tend to get gulped due to their shape.

Sparky you are so right, that's exactly what she does - she inhales them! Ironically we feed SS and they still get sucked down like a vacuum cleaner Rolling Eyes

Whilst it was happening I did wonder if there was some sort of rabbit heimlich manoeuvre which is why I patted her on the back. I don't know if it helped or if it was a coincidence.

I don't think she will ever be a civilised bun Laughing

I lost a guinea pig this way. It was horrible and traumatic.

That's awful, so sorry!

Fear shot through me and it only lasted about 15 seconds.

I'm scatter feeding them now but she gets so excited trying to hog as many as she can. Can't slow her down!
