Re: When To Increase Pellets?
Humum just keeps an eye on everybun and increases if any start to look or feel a little lean. It can be difficult to tell just on sight as we're obviously all getting more fur now too. She doesn't think it's really cold enough to increase yet, she'll wait until there's been an overnight frost or two.
As a guide, our outdoor buns are now on about 2/3 of the amount of pellets they were last winter. Don't forget buns are likely to be less active when the weather is bad, so they'll be burning fewer calories through exercise and just need extra to keep warm.

Re: When To Increase Pellets?
Don't forget that you have other options open to you. Feeding extra hay, especially specific timothy, rye and oat hays which are the higher calorie hays, will help. Providing good insulation will also help. Using some vet bed or using straw in some way. With my pigs I favour burying their sleeping hut in straw. And of heat pads are good for cold nights. Adding a slice of banana to their food will also increase their calorific intake. Rabbits are fairly able to cope with lower temperatures as long as they are dry and draft free so remember to check your hutch covers are in good order.

We feed extra hay in the Winter and always give them bigger hay beds so they are all snuggly warm.

I don't increase my buns food over winter, they have a handful per trio in the evening, threy have lots of hay and maintain a good weight all year round.
