Cable Tidy Advice Empty Cable Tidy Advice

Post by icedancer Sat Feb 02, 2013 9:47 am

Ok I have a slight problem.

My little darling Florence has learnt how to remove the spiral style cable tidies to get to the hidden cables. They are what I've used in the living room. She done my laptop cable a few months ago then forgot about her party trick. She's now remembered and is doing it to the extreme. She done the lamp the other week, and when my Dad looked at it he said she was seriously lucky she hadn't got electrocuted because she's gone right into it. I feel awful, even though I have protected everything, that she's been put into danger.

I'm now nervous about letting her out, most of the time she is relatively well behaved, but I can't risk her doing it again.

What else can I use, that she won't be able to remove? I've thought about a double layer of the spiral ones, but they look a mess as it is! Behind the TV looks awful so I want to redo that anyway, but I need something that is Florence proof!

Any ideas?

Humum thinks it's a pain that electrical sockets are so low down, for people with housebuns. If she ever bought a house she'd have it rewired with the sockets about 3' up Laughing

How practical is it to fix a multi-socket extension lead thing on your wall at a height Florence can't reach, so you only have one cable running up from a plug? Then you could put something a bit sturdier over that one cable.

We have some solid plastic trunking on bits Layla could get to, but it's not very pretty. There is one bit where we have just fixed C&C grid panels in front of the socket and cable, where the lead for the telly goes, as that is hidden under the dining table.

Yes plastic trunking, B&Q sell it.

We have plastic cable tidy boxes and they are brilliant and very neat looking.

Plastic trunking as the others said, we got some heavy duty cable protectors which work well but look rubbish and are really thick. Fine for the speakers cables which are much thicker than normal cables though.

We have normal spiral cable tidies on the laptop chargers, all it does it mean it takes 2 bites to get through the cable instead of one!!

I have used trunking here. It has been on the wall for 3 years now with no rabbit break ins. I have put white electrical wire around the joints just to make sure they cannot get purchase.

I'm sure I'll end up regretting saying this but.... I must be really lucky, the only wires Molly and Junior seem interested in are Apple phone chargers, and even then it's only when we've left them unplugged in stupid places.

Woodwork obviously tastes better in this house Hmmm

So there is your answer Carla - rub your skirting boards with carrots, apples, pineapple juice etc and Florence will leave your wires alone! Laughing

we use the ridged plastic tubing that plumbers use [its small in size, i think sometimes it connects washing machines ..... or dishwashers] anyway we got it from b&q a few pounds for quite a lot. you can run a few wires through it at a time but its not very flexible but the rabbits would never be able to chew it without you hearing. we run out tv cables along the floor in it. We did have to take to plug off to run it down one tube and sliced down the length of one to put other cables in .... bit of a hassle, but we have had no eaten wires .... we major ones anyway Laughing

talking of plugs, my bfs room is in the extension and when it was built he had a pet rabbit. his dad knowing this made all the plugs half way up the walls so no rabbits can reach them ....although the xbox cable never seems to be lucky enough to not be on the floor Laughing

We got half round tubing, the back plate secured to the wall, wires put in the tube then clipped into the plate, its a bit unsightly but where it is no 1 will see it.

That decorative trunking is an excellent idea. I've seen some slightly bendable trunking in a DYI spot on TV....sorry cannot remember where. They made it look like a vine running up the wall to a lamp, but the offshoots went to other places. painted or bought leaves and flowers.
