Re: Seeing John Chitty with Flopsy. U/D 10th may 2013
Sorry to read the sad update.
I have a rabbit in kidney failure too, Artie. He's not on any treatment now. Previously he had bladder sludge problems and has been on Frusomide and Metacam for about 4 years. He came off it when his kidney started failing as the calcium wasn't gathering in the bladder anymore. He's not on any medication but I've been advised to keep him well hydrated. I'm feeding him about 65% fresh grass and 35% spring greens at the moment. He has hay available but hardly eats any but is very enthusiastic about his grass.
I hope you can keep Flopsy happy and well for a long time to come.

Jack, please do not panic about EC until (and if) you get confirmation. John has tested all three of mine and all three came back negative, so don't assume that john thinks this is what it is - I suspect it's been run to eliminate it from the running.
I'm sorry to hear the kidneys are not doing so well, I do know though that. It's your care, and Johns, he is in the very best hands and you may have many more years ahead of you both. X

Re: Seeing John Chitty with Flopsy. U/D 10th may 2013
Thank you all, have got a reply from John today.
We are still waiting for E cuniculi results
Best discuss these depending on these results as we are assessing two different types of antibody to ascertain current infection vs past exposure
Otherwise, there are concerns re kidney disease on the bloods, though it is not absolutely categoric (rabbit blood rarely is, sadly)
Prob best to call me on Tuesday so we can discuss results so far
John

Re: Seeing John Chitty with Flopsy. U/D 10th may 2013
Jack, try not to worry as JC is a fabulous vet and has shown his skill with KatieB's Annie.
If you are concerned about EC, remember to look at the pictures of Domino that Sarah Jane posted. Domino was very seriously ill with lots of symptoms and he is now leading a pretty good happy life. It just means that even if the worst comes to the worst and Flopsy develops EC, it isn't the end of the road.
Maysie is absolutely spot on about grass. My vet said that it is even better than hay for buns as the silica in the grass means that they have to chew it even more as it is slippier for them to deal with.

As Nickie has said, as hard as it is, try not to worry too much about the EC. You are in the best possible hands with JC.
Hope you get some answers later today xx

Re: Seeing John Chitty with Flopsy. U/D 10th may 2013
Just an update, I know its been a while since I have updated, the E.C test results were slightly delayed due to the bank holiday!
John asked us to pop along these evening to discuss the results and to put him on medication for his kidney disease.
Thankfully the E.C show no active infection but he has been exposed in the past, But I am so glad he does not have E.C, for now anyway!
He was weighed and the poor boy is just 1.8kg, his 'healthy' weight is normally 2.2kg. He has been put on fortekor to try and keep his kidneys stable and his blood levels. Bella was on fortekor for her heart disease and she really responded well so I am really hoping flopsy does as well.
We have been given enough fortekor until next Saturday then John wants to see him again to see how he is progressing. I am just hoping he responds to the fortekor and he can gain some weight and of course to keep those kidneys stable. John wants to do some more blood tests in 3/4 weeks so he can see how effective the drugs are.
He also mentioned Flopsy does have a bit of arthritis so we have increased his metacam but of course as that can sometimes not agree with the kidneys and can damage them we may have to consider in the future moving him on to Tramadol for his pain relief and anti inflammatory. He is on Metacam for his dental and tooth root pain at the moment.
Thank you everyone for the vibes, hopefully the fortekor can keep him stable for a long time to come.

The poor boy
I'm sending him loads of vibes that his new meds work for him. I'm sure if there's anyone who can turn him around it's John. And lots of hugs for you
