Given that he was the local stray, I'm wondering if he has other houses he frequents, and has simply spent the night there, and once the home owner has seen the flyers, they have let him out again.

I am so happy to see him I am crying again... We've never had a cat come back after being missing over 24 hours before.

My Hu-Nan has a cat which adopted her and has spent a lot of time at her house in the last few years. She'll be moving soon so she took him to the vet and had him scanned for a microchip - it turns out he officially lives three doors away Laughing

The lady was ever so pleased that my Hu-Nan bothered to check he had a home and would be ok after she moved Smile

It is such a shame that they do not understand how we worry. We have a very thin tabby cat who comes to our place for food and warmth. She does have a home but is not looked after. To tell the truth, I think she goes to several houses for meals LOL!. She is very thin though, if I could afford it I would take her to the vet.
